11 Mildly Amusing Country Song Titles

Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in Bed

You definitely don't want to get this one mixed up! If you do you'll end up in a sticky situation, and more than likely with crumbs in your bed sheets.

Wouldn't Take Her to a Dog Fight, Cause I'm Afraid She'd Win

Aaw, how terribly poetic.

I Fell In a Pile of You and Got Love All Over Me

This one's actually kind of sweet… in a completely bizarre, slightly gross sort of way. Ah well, you've gotta take what you can get these days where romance is concerned.

Liked You Better Before I Knew You So Well

This one's not so much funny as frighteningly accurate methinks. Come on, I'm sure everyone has experienced this at some point in their lives! You get to know someone… and realise you really don't like them quite as much as you thought you did.

I Just Bought A Car from a Guy That Stole My Girl, but the Car Don't Run So I Figure We're Even

This one made me chuckle an unhealthy amount! It's actually a little piece of genius, don't you think? Or maybe I just need to get out more? Hmm…

I Would Have Wrote You A Letter, But I Couldn't Spell Yuck!

The best thing about this one is that he obviously CAN spell "yuck", because it's right there in the title… Unless he looked it up in a dictionary after he decided he couldn't spell it, just so he could write this song… Actually, is the word "yuck" even in the dictionary? Ok, I've been thinking about this way too much.

You're the Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly

And who said romance was dead?

If My Nose Was Running Money, Honey, I'd Blow It All on You

Again, the sentiment is rather sweet… it's just a shame about the choice of metaphor! On the one hand I'm thinking "aaw, bless, that"s quite cute!' and on the other I'm thinking "uh, could you just not use a tissue instead?"

I've Been Roped and Throwed by Jesus in the Holy Ghost Corral

Talk about a bad day!

I've Been Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart

And we're back to the toilet humour! Hmm… I'm honestly not sure what to think of this one… I'm leaning towards wondering whether hearts have bathrooms, but I know how utterly ridiculous that sounds, so I think I'll just back away slowly instead…

Ever Since I Said "I Do," There's a Lot of Things You Don't

Yet again, more painfully true than anything else, I suspect. Funny though… especially if you start wondering if the "things you don"t' are actually listed in the lyrics… I'll leave you and your favourite search engine to find that one out, shall I?

This is a personal list so, I am aware in your eyes there are hundreds of song like this. I have just compiled a list of my most annoying.

Euro trip: Scottie doesn't know

I was forced to go to this movie with my fiancé and his son but, I'm glad I was. The movie is like Chevy Chase in European Vacation only more vulgar and geared towards a younger generation. I love it! Matt Damon makes a special cameo appearance. Check it out.

Music and Lyrics: Pop goes my heart

Ever since I saw this movie, I have to watch this video at least once a day. It's hilarious and Hugh Grant is actually singing.

Macarena: Los Del Rio

I think I heard this song over a hundred times an hour when I was on spring Break in Mexico. Not only did I do the dance every time it came on, I actually knew all of the words when I came back home.

Wannabe: Spice girls

All I remember is dancing around in the Sorority house when I was getting ready to go out and party. It was a girl power moment!

Barbie Girl: Aqua

Imagine driving down the road on your way to Spring Break. Need I say more?

I would walk 500 miles: The Proclaimers

This is a song that repeats its verses over and over and over and over again. I guess the new age groupies loved this one. It was shortly lived but, it still shows up on the Internet everywhere you turn.

I'm too sexy: Right Said Fred

Alright, this one I just can't complain about. I remember listening to this song in high school during talent shows. The football players actually dressed up and performed the whole video. Quite controversial at that time.

I wanna love you tender: Ohjaaja Mervi Vesala

This looks like a 70's workout video. I actually, at one point, got up and started dancing. I just couldn't help myself.

Hamster Dance

As annoying as this was when I was in college, I just couldn't stop watching it.
Imagine a dancing rodent taking on a new identity all over the internet. Whoever came up with this must be a millionaire or they may be coming up with something new like a dancing skunk. Oh wait, that's been done already!

Jump in my Car: David Hasselhoff

The "Hoff" has tried to capitalize his fame on Baywatch for years now. His biggest mistake was taking it to the music industry. He was very big Germany but, his music never was serious enough for the states. It still makes me laugh though.

11 Must Listen-To System of a Down Songs

SOAD or “system of a down” has been the best alternative rock band in the last decade.

They have explored astonishing areas of humanities and politics through outstanding lyrics that just reach directly your soul and mind.

For those who don't know the band, SOAD consists of John Dolmayan the drummer, Shavao Odadjian the bassist, Daron Malkian the guitarist also the composer and songwriter and finally Serj Tankian the lead vocal and the keyboardist. Of course he writes and composes songs too.

SOAD has got tons of successful songs that really can't be forgotten. Nevertheless, they have some remarkable lyrics that everyone should know about and understand.

Here are 11 songs of the best they wrote:

Album: System of a down

Song title: War

This song is about the real purposes behind wars.

Album: Toxicity

Song title: Chop Suey

This song is so spiritual yet it has a hidden political meaning behind. It is one of the best that made the name of SOAD.

Album: Toxicity

Song title: ATWA

A great manifestation of inner human struggle described in very touching lyrics.

Album: Toxicity

Song title: Aerials

One of my favourites and has one of the most famous quotes that states the truth of humanity.

Album: Toxicity

Song title: Prison song

*This one I should list the whole lyrics of it because it's awesome but I won't  because it might be considered offensive!!

Album: Toxicity

Song title: Toxicity

This song is about the corruption of society and the toxicity we live in daily that only get worse.

Album: Steal this album

Song title: Hey Mr. Jack

An intense song that is full of figures of speech and many metaphors that needs real understanding.

Album: Steal this album

Song title: Inner vision

This one talks about the importance of seeing inner vision inside of you.

Album: Hypnotize

Song title: Hypnotize

This song is clear about the hypnosis done by the government and media. It has simple words that are straight to the point with no meaning confusions.

Album: Hypnotize

Song title: Soldier side

An anti-war song that really states the brutality and inhumanity actions that happen in war and because of it.

Album: Mesmerize

Song title: Sad statue

A well written song that is again anti-war and against using other nations for the sake of America's greed.

So enjoy your senses with these awesome songs and comment if you care.

This Week in Music

Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl

This is a song I had to grow to like. Once I actually started enjoying it, it got too much overplay on the radio, removing Katy's unique spark from my mind. The basic storyline of the song, she kissed a girl, she liked it and hopes her boyfriend won't mind it. I don't think he'll mind as long as he's allowed to watch next time, Katy!

Lady GaGa - Just Dance

Before beginning this article, I'd never heard of Lady GaGa so I will be giving her an in-depth listen soon. This song is a repetitive one that sounds straight out of One Night at the Roxbury. Enjoyable, nonetheless.

Rihanna - Disturbia

A halfway decent dance tune. What bothered me is that Rihanna's vocals are almost at the same volume as the electronic beats for most of the song, which isn't very high unless you have the song volume jacked at a deafening level.

Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up

Meee-waaaaa! It's the return of the Pussycat Dolls! I thought they were taken to the vet's to be put to sleep a long time ago? Anyways. This new song by PCD features vocals mainly by Nicole. Isn't there more than one doll or did the ladies get into a catfight? Basically the lyrics regard Nicole's dream as a child to be a popular movie star with boobies. Then there is the ever so repetitive line "Be careful what you wish for "cause you just might get, just might get it, get it?" The only annoying part (other than PCD themselves) is after almost every non-chorus line, the girls repeat "ahahaha" only in a different tone than they did in the song "Beep".

Shake It - Metro Station

A great breakout dance song. Unique vocals and a beat that could make you tap your foot all day. I might add that it is a sexually driven song but Metro is so smooth, you likely won"t notice. Just like I didn't notice the sexuality of Aqua's "Candyman" and "Barbie Girl" until I was into my late teens.

Miley Cyrus - 7 Things

Disney's cash cow returns with an angsty song against an ex, complaining about seven things she basically hates about him.

He's vain. Aww Miley, don't be jealous that he's more into himself than you. I'm sure he whacks off to your Vanity Fair photo that you "hate" so much.

He plays games. Maybe it's time to play by the rules instead of always getting your way, sweetheart.

He made her laugh. When is humor in a relationship a bad thing?

He made her cry. I cried watching your television show because I wanted to die of bleeding ears and eyes from your terribly dramatic acting.

His friends are jerks. So don't hit on them!

It hurts when he acts like his friends. Maybe by acting like his friends, he's being himself, not picture perfect like the Jonas Brothers.

He makes her love him. Someone call the waaaaaa-mbulacne!

May I just add that in the music video for this song, the girls supposedly experiencing the same problems with their lovers don't look old enough to be dating or to know what love is?

John Mayer - Free Fallin' (LIVE)

I've always been a fan of the song "Free Fallin' and even in a live format, Mayer does not dissapoint. Makes me want to float backwards in a Nestea commercial fashion.

Rihanna - Take a Bow

The world is a stage! And Rihanna's character has apparently been cheated on. Basically, boy cheats on girl, boy apologizes to girl, girl runs away crying "don't tell me you're sorry "cause you"re not!" Were you not a cheater in the song "Unfaithful" Riri? Hurts, doesn't it? Anyways, she wants him out of her life (the stage production) so he should just stop acting and leave (take a bow). Oh yeah, in the music video, she burns some of his belongings and walks away.

Kardinal Offishall Feat. Akon - Dangerous

Girls with curves and big boobies, rejoice! Kardinall and Akon are staring you down in random locations singing with a decent beat calling you a bad girl and a Jubee! They just can't help but notice you apparently notice them. Since the song contains Akon, based on his girl grinding history, the girl must be a fourteen year old. But, nonetheless, a decent single, just don't try to look some of their words up in the dictionary, they came from imaginationland where clouds are bewbs and there's lots of pussycats!

Jonas Brothers - Burnin' Up

Pre-teen girls, scream! It's the return of Hanson! What? Hanson grew up? Then who is this? The Jonas Brothers? Oh, Miley Cyrus' back-up band. And they seem to be falling for a girl in high heels and a red dress. They're burning up and can't really breathe which is actually believable because it sounds like the vocalizing brothers are having an asthma or allergy attack the entire time. Should have taken some inhalers and Reactine to Camp Rock, boys!

Meaning Behind "Bullet for the Pain"

The song “Bullet for the Pain” by Lovex comes across, at first glance, as a song for suicide. When I first heard this song I was thinking it was a suicidal song. The very title gives a "shoot yourself and get it over with" vibe. But my conclusion and the assumption that it is a pro-suicide song are very wrong (in my opinion).

When I first heard this song it was on Youtube with the official video. I hadn't quite been paying attention to the lyrics or the video. After listening to it a few more times I got most of the lyrics in my head (with the help of the written lyrics off to the side). The power and force put into this song is great and I absolutely love it. There's something inside the music that makes it a very strong song. Maybe it's the topic in which they sing of. But this song is not promoting suicide…

After watching the video a couple times through and through and hearing the lyrics it was easy to tell that Lovex is singing against suicide with all their heart.

Note: Music Video Spoilers!

In the video it shows the band playing in a room, but clips come up regularly of a hooded teenager with a book bag walking through dark areas, typically alone or mixed in with a crowd. Throughout the video little facts about suicide are displayed; stating how many people die from suicide annually in certain areas and their age ranges. It switches between band playing and the troubled teenager until the very end. The teenager has walked to a cliff, or a rather long drop off, and is looking down. As they lean forward to throw themselves off the cliff a hand rests on their shoulder and keeps them from falling. As the camera switches view we see it looks to be one of the band members. The teenager pulls off their hood and I'm pretty sure it is a young female. Text comes up towards the end about how there is always help.

Here's the video

Not only does the video show the anti-suicidal message from Lovex but their lyrics do as well. Its not as obvious in some places, but when thinking about it you can see how Theon (the lead singer) is singing against suicide. I admit though, I don't fully understand these lyrics yet. I feel there are a lot of hidden messages in the words that can't be fully described with letters and sentences. It's more a feeling. (Or maybe I'm insane).

Look into these eyes

I've seen the same- These two lines, to me, are saying "you" aren't alone, others have seen the pain.

Death won't spare us from the shame - The first thing I noticed, a key to seeing this is about killing yourself.

Buy more hours by forgetting who's to blame

I see the pictures

They're all gone

You've crossed the line

You don't belong

Let down your game!

Do you feel the same

As I miss true harmony

No way

(Whoa Whoa Whoa)

Bullet for the Pain

You roll the dice

Release my hell

Rebel in eyes that'll never tell

And to me you're not the only one to feel redemption - To me these 4 lines are kind of confusing. Looking at it one way I believe that its basically saying you make the choices and keep it all inside, "eyes that"ll never tell'.

Prophecies merge into seeds
Growing only to crush our dreams
Let down your game

Like I said, there is really a lot to this song I'm still trying to fully understand and I don't want to guess the meanings. Look into it yourself and figure out how you think of it. But I know this song is to prevent and not promote suicide; or at least they are singing against it. Check out the video.

Music is a magical entity in which many have difficulty describing with words. Music just is. If a song is created without words, the melody itself paints pictures in one's mind. With lyrics, the words are almost always profound or meaningful-meaningful at least to the composer, if not the listener as well. In the song, “I Chose Horses,” by an inspirational band named Mogwai, both the lyrics and its internal sounds and beats harmoniously intertwine, creating a very tranquil atmosphere. Tetsuya Fukagawa sings the song originally in Japanese. The way the lyrics are sung-or poetically spoken, to be accurate, gives the song a very personal appeal that inevitably draws the listener in, capturing he/she in a divination of a sort, a trance. The first attempt at deciphering the lyrics was a difficult one. Eventually, the reader will become accustomed to the different tenses used, as well as the various aspects of the narrators views on life. The song includes great and stunning imagery, underlying, meaningful interpretations, and is drenched with emotion.

Lines 1 through 5,

It stretches on forever

I walk through this abyss of consciousness

Relying only on my heartbeat when I face you

The open blue reflecting eternal possibility

The words we exchange intertwine

Depict someone, possibly the narrator, in a “waking dream.” It seems as if he/she feels more alive within this dream, as opposed to reality. In line two, he/she uses the word, “abyss.” This means bottomless or deep, implying that he/she must have been absorbed in this “consciousness.” The definition of sleep mentions that, “…one is in a state of suspended consciousness.” The narrator is most likely in the stage of sleep called R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement), because this is where most dreams occur. The narrator might possibly be dreaming of meeting a certain loved one, possibly a lover or even God. Then, as he/she is speaking to this loved being, he/she suddenly starts to reminisce about “a melancholy figure.” This figure could be him/her in his waking life, or merely a metaphor for all the depressed and sad people in the world. Then, in lines 6 through 9,

A melancholy figure, hanging heavily

Surfaces in my mind

There must be a heart there:

Soon noise will drown it out

The narrator is so sure that this positive figure still has a heart, but it's beat is becoming drowned in “noise.” This noise could be referring to the bustling ruckus of society, disregarding the feelings and the life of the people in this world who are actually sad or depressed, who are looking for that one smile from a stranger. Unfortunately, it is reality. There aren't many people out there who genuinely care for strangers in need, unless they are known on a personal level. Humans are greedy. Selfish. Many live their lives for their own pursuit, their own gain. In lines 10 and 11,

Returning to the enveloped light

My voice raised, yearning to go back

He/she is probably waking up from this dream, which has been taking place in a heavenly atmosphere, and longs to be back there. Lines 12 to 14,

White waves stop quietly

The song of the clouds breaking the surface

Words of promise to the insane sunlight

were the most difficult lines to interpret in this piece. The stopping of the “white waves” could possibly imply the calm before a storm. The song of the clouds could perhaps mean the beckoning of rain and thunder. The “song of the clouds” are considered words of promise to the “insane sunlight” because “insane sunlight” could be interpreted as a false, empty kind of happiness that everybody in society longs to feel, or says they feel. This insane sunlight is keeping people from feeling other emotions-they are caught up in their own little worlds, trying desperately to be happy, hiding what they really feel. The incoming “storm,” a metaphoric storm, could mean the cleansing of the false, heartless society, or the ending of the world's empty happiness (as mentioned in line 18.)

In lines 15 - 16,

I gaze at the fragments of thought spread out at my feet

Tears of hope for those unfulfilled

the narrator is looking upon all the thoughts of the world at his/her feet, all as shattered fragments, incomplete. Intertwined with the line, “Tears of hope for those unfulfilled,” It is interpreted as the narrator being able to see the reality of the world: how many people live their lives suffering from broken, unfulfilled dreams, almost entirely hopeless. The next line (17), “To whom do the stars belong?” poses the rhetorical question, “Are the stars only able to grant wishes to those whom they belong to?” Seeing as stars are a source of hope and inspiration and are wished upon by many, the narrator emits a pessimistic tone about how unfair the stars are to those who wish upon them. Finally, in lines 18 - 19,

Sometime this sadness will end

My heart's response will continue the story

the narrator displays his hopeful attitude for the first time. He/she mentions that the sadness will end and he will forge on his journey, knowing that the love in his heart is enough to keep the entire world spinning.

The song takes a different turn and starts indirectly talking about society. The narrator says (in lines 20-26)

Silhouettes reflected in my eyes:

Countless faint smiles lined up before me

Gazing towards the exit

This beloved landscape

A vision brings

An instant of whiteness and the palm of my hand

All exists within one stride

How he/she saw silhouettes and countless smiles of people lined up, “gazing towards the exit.” Which probably is referring to heaven, or the afterlife. Silhouettes are all exactly the same, and very indistinguishable. The narrator is implying that everybody who is waiting to enter “the beloved landscape,” is exactly the same. They all exhibited “faint smiles,” as if they all lost the hype of entering the afterlife long before. The faint smiles also signifies the lack of their devotion, possibly to their religion, and their bluntly unenthusiastic attitudes towards entering the afterlife, whatever it may be. The line, “all exists within one stride,” implies that death is so close-it is one step away. The word stride is a stronger word than step, because a stride requires more energy, and is much larger and thought out. Personally, the notion that death was one stride away could possibly mean that whoever takes that final stride could be letting death take them-by committing suicide. As the ending of the song approaches, there is a stunning conclusion.

In line 27,

Bells sound the arrival of the flood

The bridge of the sky and the clamor of twilight

I pass through this night; in silence

I extinguish my lamp, and in the moonlit street

Give an innocent smile for the happiness to come

the metaphoric storm has come. Bells are usually rung by a church, mainly by humans. Perhaps the people were hoping that their religion could save them from whatever fate they deserve, but instead, this “flood” washes away those who merely used religion as a “Plan B.” In the end, the narrator sees, “the bridge of the sky,”-A rainbow! Perhaps the last rainbow of hope before nightfall) which is noted as “the clamor of twilight.”)

The storm is over, the sadness the narrator has once experienced is uplifted off his/her shoulders, and he/she has kept the last burning flame of hope for the world, kept alive, held in an innocent smile. I believe that this song portrays not one, but many lives of different kinds of people in this world, how each and every one of them goes through series of surreal surroundings and feelings, hopelessness and eventually happiness. Each individual goes through a spiritual and emotional journey of finding their true identity and place in the world, ultimately to be able to understand what lies deep within ones heart.

Songwriting

How do you write a great song? Well I am here to give you a few tips on how to do that. First off, the best way to "write" down the songs that you are writing or have written is to use a Dictaphone. I know that just writing your lyrics out on a piece of paper is how most of us do it but if you are singing and playing guitar or any instrument it can be difficult to remember how the tune went or strumming patterns. It has happened to me before.

First off before writing a melody try and think of lyrics first. It works very well. For some people this doesn't work but trust me it will help a lot and it works for almost everyone that tries it. Don't even get a melody try and write the lyrics. Sometimes we simultaneously sing our lyrics with a melody but try your hardest not too do this. First write the lyrics.

There are three3 main structures to a song the first one is the ABAB which A-Verse and B-Chorus. It is a very common structure in the music on the radio. The next one is the ABABC which is just a C-Bridge the bridge is usually after the second chorus. The last one is the ABC which is verse, pre-chorus, chorus

Having trouble thinking of songs to write about then just remember this. A very easy way is to tell a story in past tense such as your first girlfriend or what happen to you as a kid and stuff like that. Another one is to write a story about what's happening to you RIGHT now in the present. Like how you are mad at someone or something or what's happening on the news. Another way is to write about what might happen in the future like what would happen if you broke up with your girlfriend etc. There isn't anything that works better than the other. You can even mix these different things like tell a story in past tense then go to the present then the future etc. Mix it up.

A good song always grabs its listener. The songs that make it big are usually about Pain, Confusion, Desire, Drama, Excitement, Anger, Sorrow, Regret, and Happiness. It is very common for a songwriter to start a song in the past and then end in the present like how someone had a great time then they broke up with their girlfriend/boyfriend and now they are in despair.

Lyrics are usually able to rhyme more often than not a song will rhyme and when you are stuck on something rhyming with another word just go to a rhyming dictionary. Don't worry amateurs aren't the only ones that use this, even professionals use this like sting for example he uses one so if he can I'm sure a beginner could. Plus if a song rhymes it is much more memorable than if it doesn't.

If you can't think of anything to write about just take a break go outside and get a breath of fresh air. It is very good for your mind and sometimes you can get ideas from just what you see outside. I know i have done that and it helps a lot but it is different from person to person. Some people have to stay in their room for hours until they think of one but it is great to take a break and usually the ideas start coming as you relax. Or even when you aren't trying to write a song that's how many famous people get their songs.

A good song is a song that has an introduction for 10-15 seconds or so. If it's after that most people will get bored and turn the radio station. For the chorus you would probably want to start that in the first 50 seconds probably 40-50 seconds. These are just the songs that make it on the radio im not saying it is bad to write a 10 minute song but if you want it to be played on the radio it shouldn't be longer than 4minutes and 30 seconds.

If you happen to be stuck just trying to figure out where to get the perfect chord progression but you don't want to copy someone else's well that's your problem. Most of the tunes are have been made by someone, sometime, someplace, so your tune will never be:"original". Most melodies are re-used so instead of trying for hours and hours to figure one out just take a tune that you know and change it up a bit. Most of the famous singers do this too I actually can't even think of an artist who hasn't. If you like a certain type of music then listen to lots of that type of music and then hear what sounds good and what doesn't and use that.

Fall in Love with Lyrics

Many people choose to listen to a song because of its melody or who's singing. The question is how many listeners take their time to listen to the words and to let them sink in? Do the people of today understand the emotions and the story behind the lyrics? Some songwriters live un-noticed for their talent; but they are the ones that are able to reflect the world by translating it into flowing words.

There are many lyrics that are perfect for a type of day or occasion. For example the classic: “Happy Birthday,” a song everyone knows the words to by heart. This song shows how a small tune with a few repeating words has become the most popular and most-sung song of all time. Now lyricist's talents have expanded beyond belief, lyrics mean something now and are much more complex than those of the “Happy Birthday” chorus.

Johnny Cash showed how his lyrics could relate to real life. In my opinion he started the march to meaningful lyrics. “Walk the Line” which has become the title for an Oscar-winning film; is a song with substantial words.

In today's musical culture the best lyricists are those that are able to conjure up thought in their listeners minds; those that are able to provoke interest and intense wondering just by one line of the song.

One of my favourite songwriters that I discovered only recently is Luke Pickett. His soothing songs are webs of magical words that tell a story. One of his best songs is “Empty Corridors.” The story in this song isn't on the surface that's what makes the lyrics so special; you have to dig deep in thought to appreciate it, and once you've found it: you will also fall in love with lyrics.

When I was young I used to listen to the popular music that a young girl is supposed listen to; but there was one song that lit a spark in my heart that now beats for the love of music. Not an obvious choice of song to start this relationship, but with a chorus that is meaningful to any music lover: “God is a DJ” by Pink made lyrics mean more to me. I read into the words of every song after hearing the chorus of that one unlikely but special tune.

I was on holiday once when the medley to “Grease” was blaring out of a nightclub nearby. My dad started to sing along and got the lyrics wrong. When I corrected him I started to explain the point of the words. My mum then looked to my dad and said, “You listen to the lyrics, but she (meaning me) listens to the lyrics.” That showed me how anyone can hear the words being sung to a song, even if it's your favourite, but some people may never actually listen to the words.

Next time you fall in love with a song, sit back and breath in the words, let them mean something, understand them. Maybe you could also fall in love with lyrics.

Eight Favorite Songs That Defined my Youth

No matter how old I get, or how many years seem to roll by, hearing certain songs sends me right back to my youth. Growing up in New York's Hudson Valley, I heard it all. My formative years were defined by music as varied as punk, disco, folk music and classic rock.

I find that some songs continue to be touchstones for me. Just hearing the music I grew up with and revisiting certain songs again can send me hurtling back in time to my youth, remembering the events, thoughts and feelings of that time.

Here are some songs that have personal significance for me, as the music that helped define my youth.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by Elton John

As a little girl, I remember waking up early on weekend mornings and listening to Elton John on my little blue plastic Panasonic Toot-a-Loop radio (I used plastic ear buds and my big sister's matching donut shaped radio was bright yellow decorated with peace sign stickers!)

I had no idea what Elton was talking about when he mentioned the girl with kaleidoscope eyes, but I wanted to know more. This song fascinated me, as a kind of gateway to mysterious grown up stuff I then knew nothing about. I was a creative kid, I loved the imaginative lyrics and this song seemed all about play and wild fantasy worlds.

Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan

Whenever I hear this song, I am transported back to my second grade class taught by Ms. Lynk. My teacher was a hippie and I decked myself out in love beads and braids and colorful outfits so I could be just like her. How I adored Ms. Lynk and some of my other teachers at the time! We used to sing this song in class, and perhaps that stimulated my interest in performing (I would later go on to perform in plays and study acting.)

Memories of Dylan make me recall a time of peace and love and a circle of school kids swaying and singing along to that song. Everything seemed much simpler then, in an era before color coded alert levels, a time when the answer is blowin' in the wind…

American Pie by Don McLean

American Pie was one of those songs that was everywhere as I was growing up, and it became a sort of anthem of my youth. In a time before iPods and music downloads, there was just the local radio station to rely on, along with spinning some vinyl. American Pie was constantly playing in the background when I was a little girl; at about eight and a half minutes long, the song seemed neverending to my young ears!

The song has additional significance to me, because in 1964, Don McLean won the first ever talent search competition at a local summer fair called The Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck, New York.

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

Along with American Pie, Stairway to Heaven was another one of those songs that seemed to go on forever. This made it the perfect background music for school dances and for the prom! When someone asked you to dance during Stairway to Heaven, you were assured of spending many minutes out on the dance floor, holding on tight to your crush and swaying to the endless strains of Zeppelin.

Stairway to Heaven always evokes for me memories of school dances in the old gym of our tiny rural high school in the Hudson Valley. When it wasn't being used for basketball games, our creaky old gym with the ancient wooden stage was dressed up in cheesy disco lights and lots of crepe paper for dances and special events. Led Zepplin makes me think of cotton ball clouds, too much construction paper and the crepe paper streamers that decorated the old gym for our junior prom theme: Stairway to Heaven (the effect was a little tacky, but fun!)

Rock Lobster by The B-52's

School dances in our tiny farming community also featured a ritual called the battle of the “air bands.” I had a crush on a boy named Rick, a family friend. One night Rick dressed up with some classmates as The B-52's, complete with tight pants, punked out hair and sunglasses, and the group did their best Rock Lobster for the crowd.

Punk seemed a little preposterous for our tiny, All-American community in upstate New York that certainly had no edge. But Rick rocked the house. I also remember getting to dance with Rick for endless minutes to Stairway to Heaven, which was divine.

When I was a senior in high school Rick died in a tragic accident, but whenever I hear those songs it always brings me back to those sweet, innocent high school memories of the times we shared together.

We Got the Beat by The Go-Gos

Who can forget the thrill of getting their learner's permit and hitting the open road? (and trying not to hit anything with the car!) We Got the Beat by The Go-Gos was the background music as I was first learning to drive. I loved the infectious pop beat and the girl power of this fun group. I loved every song on The Go-Gos Beauty and the Beat album and I played their songs over and over the summer I learned to drive (a tiny, four on the floor bright yellow compact Chevette with cool red racing stripes!)

Call Me by Blondie

Before I got out of high school, something pivotal happened in my development: I discovered Blondie. Blondie was such a revelation to me and other girls. Here was a strong woman, unafraid to be powerful, individual and sexual. Anyone who undersold Debbie Harry as just another dumb blonde quickly changed their mind. Her lyrics, her sound and her delivery were unlike anything seen before, and she definitely helped change the role of women in the music industry. Every time I heard Call Me, I was impressed by how cool Blondie was, and their downtown New York vibe made me long to leave the Hudson Valley to pursue my own artistic career in New York City.

New York State of Mind by Billy Joel

I'll admit it: I wasn't one of the cool kids in school. I was either a drama geek, or spending time in the library hitting the books, dreaming of my fabulous future that would begin when I left upstate New York.

I recall hours spent in our small school library spinning Billy Joel records. I was in the honor society, which meant that I could wander the school and do what I wished during my study halls. So I chose to sit in the library and hang out in the peaceful courtyard there, or go into the music room and put on some headphones and listen to Billy Joel.

Joel sang about Chinatown, and Riverside…and totally being in a New York state of mind. Whenever I hear that song I think about being young and dreaming of a performing arts career in the Big Apple, and a shiny new life that I felt was waiting for me in Manhattan.

Now that I've been to New York City and returned home to the Hudson Valley, I have a greater appreciation for growing up in a small town. These are some songs that make me fondly remember my youth in upstate New York.
