Exodus: Movement of Jah People

It was appropriately dubbed the album of the twentieth century. When you listen to the lyrics of the legend's songs, you cannot help but notice that Bob had exceptional vision - beyond 20/20. He was truly a visionary!

"Many people will fight you down, when you see Jah light. Let me tell you if you're not wrong, well everything is alright." It's true of any revolution. There is always bitter opposition. The important thing, as Marley put it, is to know you're right. If you're not wrong, all that will matter is reaching your goal.

"Open your eyes...and look within, are you satisfied with the life you're living? We know where we're going; we know where we're from. We're leaving Babylon yah; we're going to our Father's land...in this Exodus! Movement of Jah people! Everybody move! Everybody move now!"
Only Jah people can understand His message. The Exodus was not for the Israelites alone. Search the record and you shall find, Nubians, Egyptians and whoever else saw the light, joined the ‘Exodus'. Are you coming along, friend?

"Set the captives free! Set the captives free!"

"I don't have prejudice against me self. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white."-- Robert Nesta MarleyTo access the song please go to this link.

PS: I cannot help but get inspired, whenever I listen to great songs such as this one, by the prophet of reggae. He was doubtless a grand master at his own art. For no one can come up with a master piece, unless he is first one himself. His music transcends cultural, geographic and ethnic boundaries. He sang with so much conviction and passion that held his audience in total awe. Bob had the stuff of which icons are made. He did not allow threats and even attempts (at least one notable assault) on his life, deter him from his mission. Marley had a unique way of expressing himself, both on and off stage. It is very easy to observe that he was a man of the scriptures, as Bible quotations were a constant feature of most of his songs. Most great men are only fully understood and appreciated in hind sight. If asked which my favourite song is, I would be at great pains to decide. Let me see now, Exodus, Afrika Unite, Three little birds, War, Redemption Song, Buffalo Soldier, Stir it up, No woman no cry...man, I don't know. I guess it depends on my mood.

History of Reggae

Reggae music often associated with peace and Jamaica made its origin in Jamaica. The origin of the word is not known yet many have their own definitions. For instance, Bob Marley suggests that Reggae is Spanish for king's music. Reggae was influenced the most by the popular Jamaica music ska and rocksteady. Reggae started as ska and then the musician cut the tempo in half, which brought them to rocksteady. After the cut the rocksteady tempo in half, that brought them to modern Reggae. Here are some the artist that are credited with having some of the first Clancy Eccles and his song "Say What You're Saying", and Lee Perry and his hit "People Funny Boy".

Jonny Nash is credited with having the first Reggae hit in the US with his single "Hold Me Tight". But by far the person most associated with Reggae is the one and only Bob Marley. The 1970's and 1980's are considered as the golden age for Reggae. When Eric Clapton did a remake on Bob Marley's song, "I Shot the Sherriff" is gave Reggae acceptance into the rock world. Radio play of Reggae in the UK influenced many bands to pop up, such as The Clash, The Slits, and The Ruts. And in 1985, the Grammy Awards introduced the Best Reggae Album; this was first won by Black Uhuru's album Anthem. That is the history of Reggae.

Reggae is a sound unlike any other. It has a very slow tempo and is always played in 4/4 time, or swing time. This can sometimes make Reggae sound very simple, sometimes songs don't uses more than one or two chords. For example, Bob Marley's song "Exodus" is composed only of A-minor chords. Drums and percussions play one of the most important parts in reggae. The drums are high pitched are played on the tom-toms and snare drums. The steel drums are also a big part in Reggae music. Drums and percussions are found at the intro of reggae music, and carry the beat throughout the whole song. Bass also is another crucial part. The drum and bass together is called a riddim. The base riffs in Reggae are very simple and usually focus on a single heavy note. The guitars in Reggae play manly chords and offer the choppy or sometimes bluesy sound. Vocals are also very simple. They usually remain in one key but are carried by many different backup vocals. The lyrics in Reggae are what are most noted. They include themes that talk about freedom, love, peace, anti-war, black supremacy, and the use of marijuana. Overall the sound and feel of Reggae is smooth and relaxing.

By far the most recognizable name in Reggae is Bob Marley and his sons. He was born in Saint Ann Parish and never knew his father. His first band was with the wailers who included Peter McIntosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith. There first album Catch a Fire included "Get Up, Stand Up" and "I Shot the Sheriff" which brought them worldwide status, but in 1974 the band broke up. After the break-up Marley kept the name Bob Marley and The Wailers, where he made another major hit "No Woman, No Cry". Over the years Marley performed in many free peace concerts like Smile Jamaica and One Love Peace Concert. Marley continued to produce Reggae hits like "Three Little Birds", "Jammin'", "Wake Up and Live"; all of these have peaceful and inspiring messages in them. Marley's finale studio album Uprising contained one of his most religious and inspiring songs, "Redemption". Sadly in May 11, 1981 when Marley was coming home from Germany, his plan had to stop in Florida for a medical emergency. The tumor in Marley toes, that he attained while playing soccer, had spread to his lungs and brain and he was pronounced dead that day. He was buried in his home town with was Gibson Les Paul, a soccer ball, a huge marijuana bud, a bong, a ring from his son, and a bible. His last living words to his son Ziggy was "Money can't buy life." Hopefully that message can be taught and understood by everyone.

Reggae has separated itself from other form of music with its metallic drums, simple bass riffs, and inspirational lyrics. It has influenced many to stop hating and learn to love. Reggae has also produced many bands and subgenres. Some Subgenres include hip hop and rap, reggaeton, reggae rock, and dance hall.

Reggae Music: The Heartbeat of the Jamaican People

Reggae music truly is the heartbeat of the Jamaican people. Everywhere you go in Jamaica, whether you are on the Hip Strip in Montego Bay, the seven mile beautiful free beach in Negril, the streets of Ocho Rios, or out in the country, all types of lively reggae music will reach your ears and vibrate your soul.

There are many popular reggae artists in Jamaica, and they vary by the style of reggae music you love. If you like to light a spliff or just relax and be carried away by the sweet relaxing tunes of traditional roots reggae or Rastafari music, you can't miss the hot and relatively new I-Wayne and his album Lava Ground. His voice will touch your soul, and his messages are smart and political. Popular for a long time, even making music from his former prison cell, Jah Cure is also a must hear. His new album, True Reflections, is wonderful and thoughtful. But don't overlook his prior albums, especially Freedom Blues. I also always enjoy the classics - Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, and Barrington Levy, just to name a few.

If you want to get up and dance, you can go Back to Basics with Beanie Man, the "Michael Jackson of Jamaica." Beanie Man is hands down the biggest Dancehall artist ever in Jamaica. His music makes it absolutely necessary to shake your booty. In the dancehall category I must also acknowledge Elephant Man, for his innovative hair and outfits, and his contagious dance moves. You can't go to a dancehall in Jamaica without someone signalling da plane. Sean Paul and Shaggy have some hits in both the relax and hit the spliff category and the get up and shake it category. And let's never, ever forget the amazing (if not recently heard from) Buju Banton! "Wanna be loved, not for who you think I am, not who you want me to be, could you love me for me?" Ok, I couldn't resist.

Last but not least, the ladies of the dancehall need a shout out. If you like to get down and dirty, Lady Saw is the artist for you! Can we say DIVA? She sings quite a bit about her lady parts, but she does her thing in a sexy and classy way - but watch out, she will take your man! "I've got your man" is a great track. Cecile and Spice also get shout outs for their bold lyrics and the way they love themselves and generally promote womanhood. In Jamaica, there is a reggae artist for every reggae lover's taste, mood, and location.

May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace

Dube was slated to visit Uganda in a Musical show this December and all Ugandans were already bracing for the man who usually sets the entire city of Kampala astir. Now that wont come to pass because some dark hearted people thought he should not live to see another day and they got him killed in cold blood on Thursday, 18th October, 2007 in the presence of his two teenage children.

Lucky Dube was only 43 when he met his senseless death. In my country, his music puts smiles in the many wretched hearts allover the place because he was a Reggae star who sang about life, family, morals, freedom, respect and the virtues of love. He was Rastafarian and wore dreadlocks, but Lucky neither smoked nor drunk alcohol. He was a freedom fighter and had a stint against apartheid in the years of racial divide in South Africa with his songs.

He started his musical career quite humbly in 1982 and became a household name by the late 80s and the early 90s. He boasts of 22 Albums to his musical accolade and in my country, every rural person can hum at least a stanza of Dube's many touching songs about life. His most moving song today in his demise is “Daddy In Whatever You Do, Remember me”. Many of the FM stations are blaring this particular number and many young people have been seen unconsciously wiping tears whenever this song is played on the Kampala streets. Many of his portraits in full size adorn Kampala business centers and Ugandans are buying most of these portraits as away of identifying with this great musician.

The last time Dube was in Kampala in 2001, he told a despondent but massive Ugandan crowd like a prophet, that that was to be his last show in Kampala. Lucky was always wary of Kampala because every time he came here, one or two people would die. On the last two occasions he had visited the country, there were suffocations resulting from massive overcrowding in the stadiums of Mandela and Nakivubu. In Lucky's concert, the entire city population would converge and accidents related to traffic congestions were very common. But two month's ago, his close personal friend and promoter in Kampala, Mr. Rugasira had successfully persuaded Lucky Dube to change his mind and visit Uganda one more time. He made a strong promise that he would be in Kampala on December 31st and plans for his show were already being drawn. Certainly this plan is not going to proceed and Lucky's original idea that he had made his last concert in this city in 2001 is going to hold for a fact, unfortunately.

The death of Dube brought the 2007 Rugby World Championship glory of South Africa, into ridiculous anti-climax. People had muted jubilations because both this win and the death of Dube evoked opposite emotions. However, for the government of South Africa, this should be an eye opener. With the daunting statistics of 19,000 people dying as a result of crime related violence annually in South Africa, the government must put every available resource into fighting crime. The world is watching closely because South Africa is a FIFA World Cup destination, come 2010 and such negative publicity of crime could jeopardize their bid to host the FIFA World cup if no tangible steps are seen to be taken

As for Dube, we have learnt that the killers who happened to be young men within the age bracket of 31-35 of Mozambiquean origin, have been arrested. Now the law must take its just course. May his soul rest eternally in peace-we love you Philip Lucky-Dube!

Mana

Rock Music is one of the most popular music around the world. Due to its popularity other cultures get influence from this musical genre. Rock en Espanol (Rock in Spanish) is one of them. This musical genre is still young but is quite popular in the Spanish speaking America.

Some of the best bands of Rock en Espanol come from Argentina and Mexico. But is in Mexico where the band known as Mana was born. Mana started playing around the 80s, during those years there was a lot of competence in the market.

Artists like Heroes del silencio, Mano Negra, Caifanes, where some of the bands performing at the time, but when Mana was launched there was little room for other bands to bright. So Mana became the most popular band. Since then Mana‘s music has changed very little, but is still one of the best bands of the genre.

Mana‘s music is a combination of Classic Rock and other rhythms like: Reggae, Bolero, Alternative Rock, and even a little bit of Bachata. Mana‘s lyrics are very poetic, they talk about love stories, the Mexican culture, angels, and more…

Mana ‘s drum beat resemble the drum beat of the North American band called The Police, but there is no connection in between them, is just coincidence. Mana recently launched a new song that reflects influence of Bachata.

Is it possible that Mana is trying to play a role in the world of Bachata? Or they are just making something different? That I don‘t know. The only thing that I can say is that Mana is still as popular as it was during the 80s and that is something difficult for any band to accomplish. When it comes to music, Mana‘s music is very well composed, rich in lyrics, voices and music.

If you like to listen to nice music, I recommend Mana.
