Music Rules: 10 Awesome Websites to Get Free Music

This is the fourth article that I've written focused on free Internet music sources, so if you are reading this blog for the first time, please understand that I do not list the exact same music sources in each and every article. New music resources are popping up all over the Internet nowadays and most of these websites are probably new to you, but this does not mean that they are somehow less important than their larger corporate counterparts that every music fan already knows about.

The purpose for writing these articles about music resources is to make it easier for music lovers to locate new by widely popular artists and that of small garage bands possibly just starting out. Finding fresh music to listen to on the Internet isn't always found on the largest mainstream websites, because not all artists view these corporate music sites in the same exact way. To find the music, we must go where the artist has made their music available free to the public.

In no way, is this list of free music resources a top 10 list, so please cut a brother a break in the comment section below this article. If you cannot locate your favorite music site in this list, then it is quite possibly noted in one of my other free music articles linked here below.

Promoting Your Band Unconventionally

What about other ways that have yet to be discovered.

I always seem to just shrug off a random MySpace request, a flier outside a music store or someone handing me an unwanted piece of paper on the train. Unless I already am familiar with your band I have no interest in spending $10 to come see a band I have never heard of.

So how about something original? Maybe you could hand make a hundred fliers and put them on paper plates or a brown paper sack. How about giving away a t-shirt, a cd, a coffee gift card, free entry to a show, guitar picks anything that helps you stand out from the rest.

One of the best examples of unconventional marketing is a funny video promoting your myspace, webpage or an upcoming show.

Here is a prime example of originality. The band Pool of Frogs created a whole series of "bandisodes". A television sitcom like video that shows their music, their creative talents and upcoming shows.

This is one of them.

Alicia Keys

Alicia keys is undoubtedly a talented artist. Her song "Tell you something (nana's reprise)" is a heart touching tearjerker. It speaks of how you shouldn't wait until the last minute to get closer to your loved ones because you never know when it's going to be "too late". Why do we always wait until someone is sick, in the hospital, or something is wrong in general before we travel any distance to visit those we love? Everyone gathers for funerals and when a loved one is on their deathbed when we can easily take the time to see them when they are alive and well. This song reminds us that we can take the time, before the storm, before something's wrong, before it's too late, to right whatever might be wrong in a relationship, to have a conversation with that person, to show them that you care. And it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I have never had a family member that I have a close relationship with die before and this song always reminds me not to wait until tomorrow to call if I want to say hi, or if I am fighting with someone, no matter what I try to tell them that I love them, even if I am angry with them. What if you assume that your parents or siblings will be there for you to apologize to in the morning? What makes you think that tomorrow is guaranteed? It isn't. Artists like Alicia Keys remind us of the importance of remembering our mortality. Her song "Like you'll never see me again" is another reminder of the importance of letting people know how much you love them because you never know when it will be the last time you see them. As a group, we spend so much time focusing on the unimportant things. If we fight, it seems more important to prove our point and to be the one who got the last word than it is to make sure that person knows you love them. We let days go by without saying I love you because we assume that the people we care about know this already. When they are gone, suddenly we regret all the things that we said or didn't say.In "Tell you something" Alicia Keys reiterates that she doesn't want "to wait to bring you flowers, waste another hour, let alone another day. I'm going to tell you something, show you something, won't wait till it's too late." We find that a lot of us feel the same way and hopefully, we take this hint and pick up the phone if only to say hello to those we love. Songs can be found on CD As I Am - Alicia Keys (there isn't a song on this CD I don't like)

Amy Winehouse has emerged as the most potential female artist when she was declared as the winner in the 50th Grammy Award. She received a total of five awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Amy Jade Winehouse, an English singer-songwriter, has emerged as one of the best female artist in the history of music. She was born on September 14, 1983 in the UK, but she has showed her talent in singing and writing song lyrics in her early age. Her second album "Back to Black" won her five Grammys, and it was also her first album which was successfully secured a place in the U.S. Billboard 200 album charts. When this album was released in the U.S, it has been sold for 5x platinum in the first week, and entered the seventh in the Billboard 200 album list. This album hit the U.S. market most probably due to her main song "You Know I'm No Good" which was channeled extensively via all major television networks in the U.S. Her 2007 follow-up album released on February 14, won her another award of BRIT Award. This was followed suit by her winning award of Ivor Novello Award. These awards have undoubtedly brought her a pride and fame as the best British Female Artist.

Among the new generation of female pop singers, Amy Winehouse's voice is unique. When someone listens to her songs, you will naturally think of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and other jazz veteran like The Supremes Group in the 1960s. Her voice incorporated the taste of popular singers like Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray.

From the music point of view, a 23-year-old singer who could sing with a mature attribute is rarely encountered. Her songs of "You Know I'm No Good", "He Can Only Hold Her", "Love Is A Losing Game", and "Back To Black" are some of the songs that let your nut wondering around the beauty of the art and music. Compared to other young female artist like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse's has obviously showed a distinction to a milestone.

Her talent in singing particularly dealing with her eclectic mix of various musical genres which include jazz, R&B and soul plus her notable signature beehive hairstyle has captured media attention apart from her fans. She portrays a good attribute as a singer with her unique appearance and an intoxicating voice. She has indeed incorporated all her feelings into her music. It seems like the music has stood lively in her world. One can feel this by listening to her songs attentively. While she is a great singer, it is indeed sad to learn that she has confirmed to have developed early signs of the symptoms which could progress to emphysema in June 2008.

Blake Lewis is Living His Dream

The album consists of funky techno music. It will be extremely effective in the dance clubs, but after listening to the first two singles I don't think it will get much more than that.

The first single "Break Anotha" was released November and was well-received on iTunes. The song didn't do so well on the charts however. After listening to it I have to say it sounded as though it was a fill-in for the album and not something you would consider to be a first track. The music seems unbalanced. It just seems as though he threw it together within minutes and not something he worked very hard on along with his co-writers. Here are some lyrics from the song to show how silly these words really are and without good music to support it, it will not see much success:

"Baby girl like cinnamon, hot for the skin he's in
Oops! Makes you wanna sin again
Defenses start to break, it's more than you can take
Wanna get ya get ya then your heart'll break"

"He's got no shame
He's got your name
And your number
Baby now you start to wonder
What's in store
What the hell
That spell that he's g g got you under"

The video to "Break Anotha" seemed as though it was made back in the 60's.It wasn't pleasing to the eye and I couldn't wait for it to be over. Flashing Lewis in and out of the screen was simply annoying. It wasn't artistic at all.

"How Many Words" is a better song and probably should have been released first. This single was released in March and still sits outside the Billboard Hot 100. It hasn't received the kind of airplay that was anticipated. Lewis even appeared on American Idol promoting his new song. It hasn't generated much success.

Blake Lewis will be touring in September this year to continue promoting his album. Thus far the album has sold a little over 258, 000 copies. The album has done better than the singles. It has reached as high as number 32 on the Billboard charts. After the tour I do not think that "Audio Day Dream" will see much more success. His best bet is to start on creating a new album with a better choice of music and songs.

A Phynix Rising

The artist is Phynix. Friday the 13th is the album title and yes, there is a song on the CD titled “Back Door Buddy.” The Murfreesboro native and local R&B troubadour sits down for a Q&A and discusses his philosophies on the death of R&B, how little help Young Buck is to the local urban scene and how he plans to scare up album sales.

C&N - What do you expect to accomplish with this album and what is direction of the music?

PHYNIX - I'm hoping this album will get my foot in the door… I want it to bring attention to me. Nationally, I just want one person to hear the single, hear the concept and appreciate the music.

C&N - … and the direction of the album?

PHYNIX - Well, my audience is 15-25 year old females, guys too. (The album) is danceable, it's for young people.

C&N - Gay people? Hispanic, Chinese, German people? Could an illegal alien feel good about bumpin' this?

PHYNIX - (Laughing) that's a good question. I mean, its not concentrated urban music. I'm a commercial artist, my image is commercial, we were being commercially minded when we made the album. It's for everybody.

C&N - Who produced Friday the 13th (The album).

PHYNIX - Mario Moore and Tony and Tim Hinton, I played guitar on the album, and wrote most of the album.

C&N - Is that a first for you?

PHYNIX - I've been writing for years… but this is a first (in this context). Everything I brought to the project the producers accepted. The way we work is that everybody has to agree on a song. What I brought to the project, they liked.

C&N - Why do call yourself Phynix?

PHYNIX - My grandfather passed away in 2000 and the last week he was alive I dreamed he had passed. I remember in the dream I went to visit the grave sight and I walked by it. When I looked at the headstone there was all this funny writing on it, and I saw the word Phynix. I don't know what it means, but it said P-H-Y-N-I-X. Since then, I felt something was telling me to use it.

C&N - What is album success to Phynix?

PHYNIX - To sell all the albums I ordered! (Bursts out in laughter.)

C&N - So how does a local soul artist survive in a Country music marketplace?

PHYNIX - Doing shows. If an artist can perform he or she will stay alive a lot longer than someone who can't. That's my main theory… you can sing the best in the studio, you can be the best singer in the world, but if you can't put together a solid consistent show you're going to die off.

C&N - So you think there is truth to the saying, ”If you're not appearing you're disappearing?

PHYNIX - Yes, that is completely true. For instance, if you happened to win an award for your work on an album, but then word got out that you couldn't perform well, you have nowhere to go but down. However, if your performance is great… (The opposite is true).

C&N - Is R&B dead?

PHYNIX - Yes!

C&N - Yes! Why is it dead?

PHYNIX - Because people are more concerned about what you can dance to, ring tones, what you can download. People want it right now. We're an on demand society. Nobody wants to hear, oh my girl left… they want to go to the club, so if you're not making a “Low Low” or a song like “Cyclone” or something that's not bangin' in the clubs a lot of people won't give it a ear. I mean I remember R. Kelly in 93'-94', or Boyz II Men when people (related) to the lyrics, instead of saying, “Let's fast forward through the slow stuff and get to the fast stuff.” It's in that sense that R&B is dead.

C&N - Do you believe that Jodeci's “The Show, The After party, The Hotel killed it? I mean in the sense that it was a hip-hop styled album that was a guy favorite, but a critical

dud and sold less than their previous albums.

PHYNIX - (Laughing out loud) “The Show The After party The Hotel,” I think that Jodeci fell into the changing market. I won't say that they killed it, but if that album had been like the others, just maybe, the market would be different. DeVante (Swing) was one of the best producers in the game; I'm not sure why they felt they needed to change.

C&N - Who inspires you, currently and historically?

PHYNIX - Historically I'd have to go with Prince, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. All three great singers and great performers… you don't get that much. Currently, Usher. He's always inspired me… but you know what, Rio inspires me. All the producers I worked with inspire me.

C&N - How do you defy the idea that Shannon Sanders was the last great hope for urban music in Nashville?

PHYNIX - You can't beat it. It is what it is… Shannon Sanders is a genius. The mentality of trying to do that same thing and get above him, I think is the wrong road. I do completely different music than Shannon Sanders, I'm a different performer, and I'm a totally different animal. For the most part, people say Shannon Sanders has done more for R&B than anybody around here, but I'm not going to say he's the last hope.

C&N - Does the national popularity Young Buck has help local urban artists, or is it a totally different world?

PHYNIX - A separate world. Most white people think rap and R&B coincide, but it's two separate worlds. The way things work in R&B and the way things work in rap are different, but because it's Black music there are similarities. What Young Buck has done for Nashville… all he's done is make it easier for rappers. (Maybe) It helped people from considering Nashville so white and country. I say that's the only thing Young Buck has done. He hasn't had any showcases for artists here; he hasn't done anything to help Nashville music or R&B. This is not a stab at Young Buck, but yelling “Tenn-a-key, Tenn-a-key” on records doesn't really do anything for us.

C&N - So, when is your next show? Where can fans of R&B pick up your album?

PHYNIX - Fans can get my album at Darkphynix on Snocaps. The next show is July 6th at The Place. It's a Love Noise event and there will be updated performance info on my MySpace page. So please visit!

C&N - What's on the horizon for Phynix? What's the future look like?

PHYNIX - I try to do show after show after show. I want to show myself to death! While (I'm doing shows) I'll be starting to record a second album… I want to release an album every year on Friday the 13th. That way everyone will know who's dropping on Friday the 13th!

S.O.S. has been in the independent Hip Hop scene for the past few years in attempts to change the game. Hailing from Harlem, New York City, he has successfully, with little promotion, established himself as one of the prominent new independent artist of the new millennium. S.O.S. began demonstrating his lyrical skills in 1992 and has improved greatly with each year that passed.
S.O.S., an acronym for "Save Our Streets", is attempting to capture a global audience with his catchy hooks and his tantalizing flow. He has established himself overseas and has a growing fan base in Europe as well as the Netherlands. He possesses a wide range of creativity and isn't afraid to try what others might be unwilling to try.

S.O.S. truly has the work ethic and the talent to succeed at the next level. With so many prospects that have watered down Hip Hop, S.O.S. is determined to set himself apart from the rest. He continues to reinvent the meaning of the hip-hop art form by bringing something new to the game on every track he makes. With his debut solo project, Sketch of An Artist, S.O.S. introduces himself to the industry in a manner that only a veteran would. Not only is S.O.S. one of the hottest emcees today but he also half of the producing juggernaut “Taft Bombers”. He pretty much is the total package. Spits fire every time he steps up to a mic and produces his own tracks. It would be a mistake for A&R's to miss this opportunity.

One listen to his music and it becomes evident that mass appeal is inevitable. S.O.S. is ready for the world to hear him out. He is laying everything on the line for a shot at stardom. A&R's get your pen and pad out, exec's get those budget planners out and lets do business ... S.O.S. is probably the best investment you could do right now ...
