What is Good Music and Where Did It Go?

A look at the musical trends and the differences between the music of today and the music of my parents generation.

Where has all the really GREAT music gone! When my parents were teenagers they got to turn on the radio and hear Bob Dylan, The Doors, The Beatles and The Stones all of them, one after the other!!! When I turn on the radio I'm subjected to this mediocre, uninspiring music that was pumped out of a bubblegum factory on a conveyor belt...

Rap music? Every rap song sounds like the ringtone on a cellular phone. You read a Dylan song on a music sheet and you get "How many roads must a man walk down.. before you can call him a man".. beautiful! poetry! thought provoking!

You read a rap song and it goes something like "Yeah..uh huh! Yeah... c'mon y'all...A huh!".. and that is an entire song!!! it's soo awful! A friend of mine listens to this kind of junk, and when I tried to get him into Bowie he stated "How can you like Bowie? he dresses weird, way too flamboyant...sort of like a girl!"... excuse me? the Rap guys you listen to wear jewelry!! Giant necklaces that weigh a ton! they even have jewelry for their teeth!!!! Their TEETH!!! Rap isn't music... its a bunch of egocentric guys who usually ONLY sing about THEMSELVES. Irish comedian Dylan Moran did a great bit about the differences between rap and blues; "In rap they all sing about what they HAVE got! In the Blues they sing about what they HAVEN'T got!".

And now there's this Emo style that exists.. i asked one of them what it's all about.. he said "we are just a really deep bunch of people. Emo stands for Emotional.. " ...a really deep bunch of people? You listen to the lyrics of any one of these Emo bands and you get nothing but the most trivial lyrics ever committed to tape. Nothing thought provoking, nothing that would have spawned many late night debates, in the coffee houses of New York during the swinging 60's! I actually don't have a problem with people that consider themselves goth's.. they are usually pretty 100% committed to what they do.. Emo's are just watered down versions of the goths... they wear the crappy make up and their depressing color schemed outfits, which they consider "anti-fashion".. let me tell you something... there is no such thing as Anti-fashion.. being naked is probably the closest you can get to "Anti-fashion".

Other than some serious vitamins to fix their zombie complexion, these make-up wearing kids need to be put on a solid diet of Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. And then, tear them away from what ever misery magazine they are reading, and shove a few copies of Edgar Allen Poe down their throats! now that's some TRUE haunting written word right there! And I dare you to have Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" playing in the back ground to really set the mood! It would be even better if we could get the baggy clothes wearing, Rap loving, homeboys to swap their clothes with the super tight outfitted Emo kids!!! that would be a funny sight!

This is just a rant that I'm on after being subjected to a bunch of these people in my new neighborhood. They are probably really great people... but I'm entitled to a rant. Hope everyone has a great week!
