Everyone has those spontaneous urges to dance like a maniac, so here is a list of my personal favourite songs to get down to! Some are remixes for those of you who live in “Scratch Happyland” and others are more classic, older numbers. So whatever your taste in music and whether you can dance or not, don’t hold it in, let out all your moves and get it out of your system with this list of danceable tunes!
Move Your Body – Marshall Jefferson
A catchy beat throughout which will get your feet moving wherever you are. This 1986 single is probably what Mr Jefferson is best known for and the song also appears in British movie “24 Hour Party People” which is definitely worth watching! This legendary artist will have you “rockin’ your body” and have you pleading for “house music all night long”. Because with house music, you can’t go wrong!
Don’t Turn Around – Aswad
This sublime reggae band hit number 1 in 1988 with this chilled out and beautifully poetic song. Favourite lines have to be: “Don’t turn around ‘cause you’re gonna see my heart breaking”. A good song to chill out to or even (in the case of this countdown) dance like Aswad themselves intended… Bogle!
Twist and Shout – The Beatles
If you like the Beatles, you LOVE this song! And it does exactly what it says on the tin; gets you twisting and shouting! This is a good song to dance to if you feel like going back a few years to the twisting move. And as a bonus, fun to sing along to!
Roboshuffle – Kid Koala
As promised, this is for those of you who liked Kid Koala’s song “Scratch Happyland” and although that is a brilliant song, this beats it in terms of ‘danceability’. Good for the robot (if you can) and will get your feet moving in no time!
Let Me Show You – Camisra (Tall Paul Remix)
Fans of British sitcom ‘Spaced’ will probably know this as the best dance song ever and the song to lead into any ‘A Team Remix’ dance! (Nick Frost=Legend!) Good for generally raving and having a good time by dancing like no one’s watching!
I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Huston
You knew it was coming! This is probably the song that inspires the most moves from the crowds (at least all of the women). The song reached number 1 in 1987 and was Whitney Huston’s first single from her second album, and I believe she started as she meant to go on.
Grip Like A Vice – The Go! Team
As a friend of mine once said: “This song WILL make you dance!” and that it does! This brilliantly underrated group released this song in 2007 from their album “Proof of Youth” (well worth buying!) and again, this is a chance to dance like no one’s watching! Go! Go! Go!
Roll Over Beethoven – Electric Light Orchestra
I love Chuck Berry, but this band made this song for me. A fantastic take on both the original by Mr Berry and of course, Mr Beethoven’s fine work. This sweet little taste of the 1970’s is instantly defining of its era and brings back lovely memories of John Travolta in THAT suit!
Dancing in the Street – David Bowie & Mick Jagger
A fantastic feel good song that gets you moving. Originally sung by “Martha and the Vandellas” this cover version was done as part of Live Aid 1985 and still stands up (and dances) today. There’s nothing more to say about it really, just that, again, it does what it says on the tin!
Soulja Boy Tell’em – Crank That (Soulja Boy)
This song is fairly recent and had the whole world crankin’ it Soulja style! This song will live on to be one of the all time greatest songs to dance to and I think it deserves the number 1 spot on this chart! I hope you enjoy it and don’t worry if you don’t know the dance because here’s an instructional video from the man himself! …
