The Future of Music

Discover the past and help decipher the future of music.

Hi, uh, just a little thought I've been meaning to ask about. For many thousands of years, we thought our voice was the only way to get music, and then we blew through reeds and beat on rocks and wood and make instruments.

Eventually, we refined these instruments using animal skin and bone, and using wood and metal in our woodwind and brass instruments, and then for over 500 years, we thought, this is the only way to get music.

Then after research and experimentation we invented the record player, then for centuries we thought, this is the future, the best and only way to get music, then we invented the 8-track tape to replace the record, then, over a decade later we made the cassette tape. When the CD was invented, it was a revolution, compressed and compacted music that could be stored in a thin disc, well, not for long, along with the new millennium came the music innovation known as Mp3, music held on your computer, transported by ipod or other Mp3 player you can listen to music on one player, smaller than your own hand, able to hold thousands of songs, photos and movies, it seems like, as time passes on, technological advances come faster, which brings up my question, what next? Mp3 seems unmatchable but so did everything before it.

If you have any ideas of what comes next, then post a comment, if I missed a step in music history, then post that too.

Hi Silent, I enjoyed your article
Maybe the next step will be to have projected holograms of bands in your living room playing gigs for you - your choice of set lists.
How amazing would that be.
Or virtual reality where you can play or sing along with your favourite bands.
