No, You Can't be a Punk Rocker with Flowers in Your Hair

My analysis of one of the worst lyrics of recent times.

"Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair"

No, dear. You wish you WERE a punk rocker. Poor grammar doesn't make you rebellious. And how precisely would you stick the flowers onto your mohecan? You've not thought this through, have you? Don't you have trouble putting together the concepts of everyone being one and pissing everyone off?

"In 77 and 69 revolution was in the air"

Or possibly not. Let's look at occasions when revolution was in the air. Poll tax protests? General strike? Miners' strike?

"I was born too late"

Aw, diddums. It's hard to be retro.

"... into a world that doesn't care"

No, no one except you cares. How grateful we are to see the error of our ways through your inoffensive pop ramblings.

"Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair"

Is anyone else embarrassed for her?

"When the head of state didn't play guitar,"

Ok, we all know Blair's a twat but what's your specific complaint here? Is it politicians being publicity whores or are you against them coming across as human? I mean we all want our politicians to be overt Upper Class Twits Of The Year and not know about all this strange youth culture malarkey. It's a bit of a silly thing to whinge about. What about playing saxophone? Does Bill Clinton get away with that?

"Not everybody drove a car,"

Not everyone drives a car now, you idiot. Ever heard of public transport?

"When music really mattered"

Hmm. 77. Knowing Me, Knowing You and Mull of Kintyre totally changed the world.

"... and when radio was king,"

I think you'll find people listen to the radio now. And weren't you on the TOTP Christmas special? On telly? Oh, you sell-out!

"When accountants didn't have control"

What did accountants do in "69 then? Obviously there was no money and everyone exchanged leaves and daisy chains. I think you"ll find accountants don't control money, they keep track of it.

"And the media couldn't buy your soul"

I think you'll find they could. Just because no-one wants to buy yours don't get all huffy.

"And computers were still scary and we didn't know everything"

BUH? We know everything now? And I think technophobia does still exist. How is it a good thing to be scared of a computer? I don't understand your point.

"When pop-stars still remained a myth"

Ah, those fictional pop-stars. I think you'll find pop mags were around in your rose-tinted times of wonder. Remember Beatle Mania?

"And ignorance could still be bliss"

Ignorance is bliss, man. Have a spliff. How is ignorance good?

"And when God saved the Queen she turned a whiter shade of pale"

See, she's using well known lyrics here to say... I'm not sure really.

"When my mom and dad were in their teens"

I can't argue with this, not knowing her parent's dates of birth. It's quite possible that one of her parents was a teenager on each of these dates. I'll give her benefit of the doubt.

"And anarchy was still a dream"

Unlike the reality it is now.

"And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail"

Or a telephone call. Or talking to people. Or telegrams. Did I mention talking to people?

"When record shops were still on top"

WOO! Capitalism in the form of HMV! Ooh yeah! Was this single available as a download? Oh, yes it was.

"And vinyl was all that they stocked"

And tapes.

"And the super info highway was still drifting out in space"

What does this mean? Seriously?

"Kids were wearing hand me downs,"

I think you'll find a lot of kids still do. Woo! Kids below the poverty line!

"And playing games meant kick around"

And then Space Invaders came out in '78. Mwahaha! the utopia is over!

"And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face"

Where as now they float above the ground on magical clouds... What is this woman on about?
