Avril Lavigne: More Than Meets the Eye

A tribute to one of the most soulful singers of our time.

While some might think of Avril Lavigne as just another "teen idol" I think that stereotype is undeserved. She came to fame young, that is true, and with what some called "teen angst"

coming through loud in her voice, but there is more to the woman than meets the eye.

In her songs she sings about heartbreak and loneliness like only someone who has been there can. When I first heard Avril, I originally thought she was just playing the "emo" high school kid angle, but with songs like "When You're Gone" I realized the woman is far more complex.

Every note, every heart-wrenching word, you can tell she desires to reach people to their core.

When Avril sings, she is holding a mirror to her own life, reflecting it back to the masses and letting them know "Hey we've all been there and there's no shame in admitting it."

Her songs like "Sk8ter Boi" and "innocence" prove what a person can miss if they're too caught up in what's on the outside of a person.

The flesh and blood is just a shell, the clothing, just a covering, and what really matters

is the soul. Avril recognizes that. and she in essence cries out "stop looking, start seeing, or miss out." I have to admit that no matter how old I get, I will always like Avril's music, because when I listen to it

I actually hear it. Furthermore I wish her the best in everything she pursues, and I also want to say, Keep touching people's hearts, make them feel the music, not just listen to it.

Oh I see how it is. Any comment that isn't stroking your ego gets deleted. Very mature.

Obviously, theres something dreadfully wrong with your eardrums. Avril Lavigne is a talentless money-cache for a dying industry. She has an elementary-level poetic ability, her music is largely simplified at the core and produced by over-paid engineers that are paid to create catchy, simple, poppy tracks.

Next time you're considering buying a CD, maybe you should consider buying something by an artist who isn't plastered on mass media adverts.

Craig, your comment was deleted for being blatantly insulting, that is "very mature" on your part? Come on man, if you don't like it...don't click it, it's that simple

this one's to craig, for someone "majoring in sound engineering" you really need a course in the "industry" and also, have you ever seen Avril in concert(even on the television) or heard her speak about her music in interviews? I have seen interviews with her and contrary to your belief, she really does put her heart into what she does, most of your cynicism comes from you being part of the industry you obviously hate creating "musical mockeries". It is because you help create musical mockeries that you have to stroke your own ego by insulting the real talents, you make me laugh....sorry, just the truth

Oh yes, because people always tell the truth when placed in front of cameras or mass amounts of people that fund their lifestyle. This has been proven time and time again. Thanks for your great input.

Maybe you should experience the real world before you talk about it.

Craig, your sarcastic jackass approach may be endearing to some, and may convince some of your credibility when it comes to "the real world", but not me.....just because something may be major label doesn't mean it's a musical mockery, the only thing your returning to debate proves to me is that you're that insecure with your own "experience" moving on.................

Nah, I'm just bored out of my mind and this is proving to be rather entertaining.

Major labels are obsessed with making money. This is it. They will demand bands simplify, modify, or even omit songs from their CDs because they don't consider them "Sellable". This is clearly noted when you see a local or indie band signed to a major label, and changing their sound massively in doing so. In very rare cases, bands that have developed a large fanbase will be given a bit more leeway by the label, knowing that their dedicated base will still bring in the money. Unfortunately, even those artists run into problems. Have a look into Reznor's disputes with his label contracts over the 90s, and Homme's recent problems with his label...

Major labels kill creative music. Everything becomes part of the dollar sign. If it isn't poppy enough, it will not be sold by them. This is the real reason torrenting is so popular; it allows the world to experience music outside of what the radio pushes. Real music. Music without ulterior motives.

I admit craig you have valid points, but I still like Avril

Meh. I never said you can't like them. But praising her and others like her as great musical talent I think is stretching it a bit. I like a few rather engineered artists; Godsmack, Hoobastank's first release, Incubus's older material... But I wouldn't classify them as great role models for aspiring musicians.
