60+ Songs Worth Listening To

Some of these you may have heard, but probably not all. All of these songs are either profoundly intelligent or darn funny. Challenge yourself to listen to some of those you are not familiar with.

These songs all have messages or meanings, many. Lyrically these are all very powerful songs. These are not necessarily favorite songs, not necessarily the "BEST SONGS", just those who are lyrically intelligent or fun. In no particular order, some you know, many you will not.

  1. A day in the Life - The Beatles. Perhaps their greatest work, John sings the first part, Paul, the second. Shows the separate directions they were going in styles prior to the break up of the Beatles.
  2. Synchronicity II - The Police. Contrasting the mundane life of a family and a legendary creature. Very ominous song.
  3. Paradise by the Dashboard Lights - Meatloaf. A teen anthem, was actually against premarital sex, and how life turns as we get older.
  4. Skin Deep - The Stranglers. A song about what "REAL" friendship means.
  5. Beautiful Day- U2. Beautiful Song with descriptive imagery.
  6. We are the Champions - Queen. Often used as a school anthem, but it was about overcoming other peoples disapproval.
  7. Redemption Song - Bob Marley. Often misunderstood, he is singing about how you need action, not just "songs" about Redemption.
  8. Dancing with Tears in my Eyes - Ultravox. Possibly the saddest song ever written. Captures the fears of the cold war.
  9. The Man in the Mirror - Micheal Jackson. A song about making a change in your life for the better.
  10. Every Breath you Take - The Police. A misunderstood song, often mistakenly used as a love song, when in fact it is about a controlling relationship.
  11. Silver and Gold - U2. An intellectual song about power and greed.
  12. Running the World - Jarvis Cocker. Great song about being the little guy in a world ruled by others. A song for true anarchists.
  13. The Devils Party - INXS. Basically The world in itself IS "the Devils Party".  Greed is the crime commited in this song.
  14. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley. If we could only listen to the message the birds give we would be alright.
  15. 100 Years - Five for Fighting. An absolutely wonderful song about life and getting older, looking back at your youth and reassuring your younger self about things.
  16. Space Oddity - David Bowie. The way the song goes between two people is very cool.
  17. Goodbye Earl - Dixie Chicks. They sing about committing a murder and getting away with it, and pretty much tell you how to do the same.
  18. American Idiot - Green Day. A good political song, it tells people that just because they are not in power, doesn't mean they have to act a certain way or believe the same as their "leaders"
  19. Imagine - John Lennon. I am sure this one is on every music list in the world, but that's okay, it's worth it.
  20. Great Summer Fair - The Box. Captures perfectly the anxiety of a little boy at the fair.
  21. Nor Crystal Tears - Strange Advance. Another eerie song from the Cold War.
  22. I would do Anything for Love (But I won't do that) - Meatloaf. Another love song with a message, you have to listen to what it is he won't do in the conversation between male and female parts, it's actually very positive.
  23. Mad World - Gary Jules. A Tears for Fears remake, that is more ominous than the original.
  24. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen. Brilliantly organized song.
  25. Fields of Gold - Sting. Probably one of the best lyricists.
  26. Mr. Jones - Counting Crows. Good story about how different people look at life.
  27. Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins. Ultimately a bad kid is the fault of the parents who raised him incorrectly.
  28. Dancing - Bauhaus. Dancing on all those things which have become so sacred they oppress us.
  29. The Pot Head Pixies - Gong. Something totally different.
  30. Total Eclipse - Klaus Nomi. Amazingly weird. You will think its two people singing, but it's only one... (a guy).

  31. High - The Cure. The word placement in this song makes it very interesting and fun.
  32. Heaven - Psychedelic Furs. Simple expression of joy.
  33. Cities in Dust - Siouxsie and the Banshees. Good song to lift you up when you need to let out anger.
  34. Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport - Rolf Harris. Well I really don't know what to say here, except my husband insisted I list this one.
  35. Insight - Joy Division. Honestly depressing song, as it foretold a real suicide of the singer.  You will note in this song he sings for the Angels and Judges to beware, that they should have taken care of the people not there.
  36. Psycho Killer - Talking Heads. Kinda different, kinda fun, kinda spooky.
  37. Right Here, Right Now - Jesus Jones. A soothing kind of song.  A chance to put our lives in perspective.
  38. Psycho Killer - Talking Heads. I've said it before, why say it again?
  39. I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking for - U2. Very real as spirituality is questioned.
  40. Tear you Apart - She Wants Revenge. A dynamic song, the radio edited version even more estranged than the original.
  41. Strayed - Slapp Happy with Henry Cow. This is just a different song to listen to.
  42. Standing in a Trash Can (thinking about you) Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Heck get all his songs they are worth a listen to.
  43. Dear God - Midge Ure. From the guy in Ultravox, a more uplifting song, than most Ultravox songs.
  44. Melt with You - Modern English. Classic 80's music.
  45. The Russians - Sting.  Another Cold War song, demonstrates Stings insight to humanity.
  46. Taxi - Harry Chapin. Good story song worth listening to how peoples lives turn out.
  47. Sequel to Taxi - Harry Chapin. A follow up to the touching first one.
  48. Lost in the Supermarket - The Clash. What do you think he is buying at the store?
  49. Peace on Earth - U2. Although written and recorded before the notorious events known as 9/11, this song very much captures the moment in time.
  50. Don't you Forget about Me - Simple Minds. Classic 80's music that should bring back memories of how it feels to be a teenager.
  51. Lose Yourself - Eminem. Although I don't much care for rap, this is a good song.
  52. The Tale - Meredith Monk. Just plain "different" this song will make you laugh.
  53. If I had a Million Dollars - Barenaked Ladies. This is a fun fun song, we all have dreams.
  54. Lovers in a Dangerous Time - Bruce Cockburn. A different kind of love song.
  55. Civilization- Frank Sinatra. A hilarious song by "Frank".
  56. Call to Prayer - Baaba Maal. It is in some kind of African language, so it must be good.
  57. Ahead by a Century - The Tragically Hip. A song about a relationship where one person believes they are holding the other back.
  58. Give Me Shelter - Sisters of Mercy. This is a powerful Rolling Stones cover.
  59. Heroes - David Bowie. A timeless song, yet dated.
  60. Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols. A catalyst for the power of Punk, a song for change.
  61. In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins. A haunting song with many different interpretations..
  62. The Stairs - INXS. Wonderful lyrics but I include it here for the incredible way it builds momentum.
  63. The Logical Song - Supertramp. A song about growing older and societies expectations.
  64. I'm an Adult Now - The Pursuit of Happiness. A song about being old and societies expectations.
  65. Sitting on the Dock of the Bay - Odis Redding. A nice melody, good lyrics.
  66. Beds are Burning - Midnight Oil. Powerful song about the mistreatment and displacement of aboriginals in Australia, but is significant for apologies due elsewhere.
  67. Unanswered Prayers - Garth Brooks. If we are all lucky we can thank God for unanswered prayers. I had to put a country song ya know.
  68. Highly Illogical - Leonard Nimoy. Yup, that's Spock from Star Trek.
  69. Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve. Ultimately it is the truth behind every one of us.

Go ahead, listen to as many of these songs as you can, I am sure you will have heard some already but many will be new to you. You will note "Stairway to Heaven" is not on the list... Why? Pretty much everybody has heard it millions of times already.  If you want to listen to something really funny - look for "Stairway to Gilligans Island".  Add your own songs to the list - remember it is not a list about BEST songs, it is a list about different songs, or those with lyrics that stand out.

If you're gonna defend a song choice, dont put kinda fun or kinda different as your explanation, it makes you seems like you have no idea what you mean to say and what you want us to get out of the song.

Plus if you list Psycho Killer as the only Talking Heads song worth listening to, you've missed the boat.

Listen to better music.

i love inxs. good additions. should have put in "'m just a man" instead of devil's party. much more personal
#5 by jeff, Jun 15, 2008
Gimme Shelter, by the Rolling Stones is a shattering howling plaintive cry from a group of musicians in the very eye of the crossfire hurricane they described in Jumpin Jack Flash. The Sisters Of Mercy cover was weak in comparison. It would have been better if they got Ofra Haza to do the backing vocals, but still it would lack the authoritative punch of the original.
In fact you might want to give all of Let It Bleed a listen, it is arguably the 'Stones' greatest album, and a five star effort -- also containing Live With Me and Midnight Rambler.
#6 by Simon, Jun 15, 2008
Some good, most I haven't heard of though. Btw, the Verve is probably the second best band there, after Queen.
#7 by Rob , Jun 15, 2008
No Bob Dylan? You are on the right track though.
#8 by Bob Dylan, Jun 15, 2008
umm where's Like A Rolling Stone
#9 by Ali, Jun 15, 2008
Mike, there is no such this as "too much U2"
#10 by Hailey, Jun 15, 2008
You need some Incubus on this list. Maybe Warning, Idiot Box, Drive, Vitamin, or The Warmth. All great songs.

I would agree with the list except for Nickleback and Amy Winehouse.
#11 by Jesse, Jun 15, 2008
so, where are the good songs? Jesus Jones? really?
#12 by Krista, Jun 15, 2008
I'm going to agree with Hailey, this list is in need of some Incubus.
#13 by Jebus, Jun 15, 2008
...wait...how did stairway to heaven not make the list?

#15 by Emilyy, Jun 15, 2008
U2's song 'Silver and Gold' is about Aparthide in Africa.
#16 by Thos Weatherby, Jun 15, 2008
A very limited and shallow list. However, at least you are thinking about something. If you wanted songs with meaning I would recommend most Frank Zappa. Try "I'm the Slime" - (about what you watch on TV) or Greggory Peccary (a nocturnal gregarious swine on his way up) or maybe listen to a beautiful guitar solo in, "Watermelon in Easter Hay". Also more songs with great meaning would come from Ian Anderson (who? - Jethro Tull) Such as, "Skating you Life Away" or Thick as a Brick. As for your first choice of the Beatles, John was having a problem finishing a song. Paul had a different song already written. The just combined the two songs. Nothing to magical. But if you want magical listen to Zappa's Wonderful Wino. Drums, Bass and Guitar written separately but they just so happen to also go with each other.

Also try The Flock's - Store Bought, Store Thought. No, not the Flock of Seagulls.

Oh come on. Hurt. From Nine Inch Nails. At least the cover from Cash if not the original... christ..
#20 by cool, Jun 15, 2008
i think dont stop believing by journey should be on there
and i personally like the list.
#21 by Sting blows, Jun 15, 2008
you don't know very much about music.
Bob dylan is actually considered one of the greatest lyricist. Beatles one was correct. However you failed to cover a wide variety of music and basically half of your list is Sting or related bands.
#22 by the truth, Jun 15, 2008
Man-- music belongs to the ears of the listener, and that changes person to person. Stumbled upon this, and I gotta say, I'm pretty disappointed with your list because I saw some bands multiple times (U2, the Police), and this points towards them being among your personal favorites...?

By the way, stings sons' band Fiction Plane is sick.
#23 by tori, Jun 15, 2008
eh, it's decent. a day in the life certainly deserves it's spot, but it's hardly one of the songs that most obviously shows the oncoming rift in the beatles.
#24 by Kelsey, Jun 15, 2008
I rather enjoyed reading through the comments more than the list. People\'s unique perspective on what it is that makes good makes a far more interesting read than a list of 70 songs. I particularly like how some people respond with ad hominem attacks. I don\'t really get why you would assault some stranger\'s character, but it is quite fun to read.
#25 by Andy, Jun 16, 2008
The piano cover of \"Mad World\" by Tears for Fears. I don\'t know who sings it, but it will make the toughest man want to cry...

I waited till da last number for FLOYD ! No Floyd, then the list is incomplete
#27 by RJ Chamberlain, Jun 16, 2008
You forgot RHCP Under the Bridge! The greatest song of all time.
#28 by s hayes, Jun 16, 2008
Hi B Nelson,
I enjoyed reading your article.
Music is such an individual thing - from the soul - that is why so many people seem to react so your article so emotionally.
Nobody should be knocked for their taste in music. If we all liked and bought the same kinds of music, the world would be a very dull place.
#29 by Lila, Jun 16, 2008
@Andy: The cover was done by Gary Jules. It's amazing.
#30 by Ray, Jun 16, 2008
Though B. Nelson has a point this list shows a deep deep lack of understanding of music. While there were some songs on this list i agreed with(maybe 4) the rest of the article is filled with utterly laughable songs. Listing artists such as nickback and greenday before thousands of other more worthy musicians is ridiculous. Nickelback and Greenday are not revered artists who's music is regarded as classics or extremly inspirational songs. Before listing theses songs again i would suggest trying not to have the musical tastes of a 13 year old girl
#31 by Allison West, Jun 16, 2008
Another great article! you really know music!
#32 by Josh, Jun 16, 2008
You forgot Don McLean's American Pie. If you can figure out the meaning it's very deep and emotional.

Thanks for submitting this
#33 by DAN, Jun 16, 2008
Nickleback? lol

"if everyone cared, we wouldn't have war, and then there'd be peace, blah blah blah"
#34 by Donkster, Jun 16, 2008
terrible shallow list

expand your horizons and this list might be interesting rather than overused stuff everybody has heard a million times
#35 by matt, Jun 16, 2008
There is too such a thing as too much U2. That began with The Joshua Tree and it has yet to end.

Some corrections:

Synchronicity II is about just that: Jung's Concept of Synchonicity. If you don't know what this is...um, GOOGLE IT. After doing that listen to the song again and it will become clear.

Paradise by the Dashboard Lights is not "Against Premarital Sex." It's a humorous allegory for a boy who gets a girl to have sex with him by devoting himself to her in the heat os the moment, then wishing he could get rid of her because he is basically finished with her. Quite sad actually.

We Are The Champions is a Gay Pride Anthem.

Psycho Killer wasn't meant to be "fun." David Byrne wrote it to convey to the listener the mindset of a psychotic murderer. Not too much fun in there. (And by the way, you entered it on this list twice as well as out of order and embedded in another description's paragraph. Proofreading works.)

#36 by Critic, Jun 16, 2008
Really generic list. I know absolutely every song on the list and I'm not particularly proud of that.

Nickelback... Amy Winehouse... this list sounds like the playlist of just about every classic rock themed radio station (minus the Eminem). How does U2 deserve to be on there like 5 times? Neutral Milk Hotel isn't on there, along with an overall void of indie music in general.

Here's some advice, never make a list of your favorite songs when the only place you find music is in your car on your way to your corporate wageslave job where you and your other co-workers banter back and forth about the crank call the hosts of your favorite radio station made on the way to work. Go to a record store and find something you've never heard before and listen.
#37 by StevenS, Jun 16, 2008
Although the Police and Sting are among my top 5 favorite bands of all time, there may be too many of their songs included in this post. Contrary to many people\\\'s opinions I have read, not in this blog, I really love all of U2\\\'s music...including their new stuff. Pop has great and underplayed goodies like Gone, Electrical Storm, What if God Would Send His Angels. All That You Can\\\'t Leave behind has particularly poignant and relevant songs like New York as well as Peace on Earth. Of course Achtung Baby, Joshua Tree, War, October and Boy all are loaded with great hits.

I love the Beatles and would have included songs from Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, The White Album and other great songs from Sgt Peppers like She\\\'s Leaving Home.

Overall, I like many of the selections from this list.
#38 by RobertTidwell, Jun 16, 2008
Not Enough variety and most of the songs are super popular so most people have heard them already. Fail.
#39 by PT, Jun 16, 2008
Have you ever heard of Trent Reznor? Crappy list dude.
#40 by Overglock, Jun 16, 2008
The things I\'d like to point out have already been mentioned, but I\'m mentioning them again just to show that I agree.

1. Proofread your article before submitting it.

2. Don\'t put something on the list and then write a 3- or 4-word sentence. These are songs that you\'ve claimed are \"profoundly intelligent or darn funny.\" Explain to those of us who haven\'t heard the song where the deepness or humor is. Justify the song being on the list.

3. If you don\'t have a reason to put the song on the list other than \"someone told me to\", the song doesn\'t belong on the list. Period. A thousand Nickelback fans could tell me to put \"How You Remind Me\" on the list of greatest songs ever, but I wouldn\'t because the only thing it reminds me of is the rotten potato salad I threw out last week. Everyone has different tastes in music, and the purpose of lists like this is to explain YOURS while making recommendations to others.
#41 by GeekReviews, Jun 16, 2008
First off, Rage Against The Machine = #1 band of ALL TIME thx. I know people wont agree with this. You know why? It's my opinion. It's not wrong its not right. It's an opinion :D
#42 by Michelle Murphy, Jun 16, 2008
Just a couple of things to nit pick at. I think if you are going to create such a list that you should defend your chices a bit. Why did you pick this particular song.

I can see you are a big Police fan. Me too. I am surprised Roxanne or tea in the Sahara didn't make the list.

You should check out Concrete Blond's song Bloodletting. It is totally kick ass.

A very good post.
#43 by hotterpop, Jun 17, 2008
Johnc, to me it's obvious you don't know much. I don't mind your opinions, and I recognize that this post has obvious problems, but what you said was rude and completely unhelpful. Maybe if you spent less time criticizing (and applying unfair stereotypes) you would actually add something to the discussion.
Anyway, on to the list.
I appreciate a lot of the music on here. Though most of it is pretty popular, and a lot of people talk about the list's lack of diversity, this is a nice list for the younger crowd who missed out on the greatest hits before our time. The comments that follow the song really bother me, especially "beautiful day- u2. Beautiful song." Most of them are redundant and, much like Johnc's comment, unhelpful. Next time try to be a bit lengthier . Beyond that, like so many others suggested, try listening to a couple other bands. It's good even if they don't play it on the radio.
#44 by Poman Rolanski, Jun 17, 2008
turn off the radio
#45 by Denice, Jun 17, 2008
Indeed I have not heard of some of them.. alot of comments are funny, negative simply because they do not like a song.

The list isnt titled "GOOD SONGS" it says "Songs Worth Listening To"
Personally I am a fan of meaningful lyrics, the songs I was familiar with do have good lyrics although sometimes the songs sucked lol...
#46 by sumer, Jun 17, 2008
somebody complained that "Psycho Killer" was on the list twice, clearly they are not familiar with the song, or they would have gotten the joke, I got the joke - very clever.
#47 by B Nelson (author), Jun 17, 2008
YES. Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears "Mad World is excellent" even Tears for Fears liked it better than their own.

I had made the list at 100 songs, and had to shorten it, as such many songs were dropped, but you can add them in comments.
Pink Floyd and The Eagles were on the original list.
The U2 song Silver and Gold is not about Apartheid, although it was written for an album against that, there are 3 stories in the song, all are about greed and corruption, only one is anti-apratheid.

I did find it interesting that most comments were focused negatively against the inclusion of some of the more "common" songs, no comment was made about Slapp Happy, or even The Stranglers, the songs that maybe people dont know about but should give a listen to, how about The Legendary Stardust Cowboy"?
Lists like this are for entertainment, and to expose you to some other songs, or a new way of looking at a familiar song.
I hope you enjoy it and take it in the spirit it was written, have fun people.
#48 by Tisk Tisk, Jun 17, 2008
None of the likes of Nas or Tupac? You may hate rap but they are two of the best songwriters/lyricists of all time, incredible songs , if you listen with an open mind that is...
#49 by poopstick, Jun 17, 2008
awful list. makes me want to tear off my ears.
#50 by chirissa, Jun 17, 2008
I would have appreciate your patience in selecting song if you have compiled best songs according to theme like: peace, war, environment, love and etc.
#51 by reborn, Jun 18, 2008
This is stupid. I like quite a lot of those songs, but of course everybody is going to say that their favourite bands are deeper and more worth listening to than everybody else's.

Fun but futile, sorry.
#52 by J, Jun 18, 2008
Including "American Idiot" made you lose any credibility.
#53 by donna, Jun 18, 2008
The "Nickleback" song did not bother me - it was one of the songs I actually knew!!!!
#54 by Bill, Jun 18, 2008
Some of these songs are ok...but stereotypical

Really needs some Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins

If your looking for some good songs that make you move and feel...try Rave and Trance

(this probably showed twice)

hey man great list. very creative. i myself enjoy many of these artists. but there were a few i have not heard of or songs i am going to check out. thanks man for the list and great job on making it into the hot content list. check me out https://www.triond.com/users/watapoloswmr14

I loved the peoples comments, I think the fact they belittle some songs, shows how few they actually know.
Interesting list. Great Comments
#57 by Timmy Luvs Stuff, Jun 18, 2008
Lists are fun even if I didnt know some of the songs, or even most of them, people get offended ez if their song isnt on this list, or that list. The complaints prove their ignorance to step out of their comfort zone and try listening to music they dont know, like some of the other songs on the list. Anyhow I am not about complaining, life is too short to be negative, and I am a very tall person, and I luv stuff, more stuff please.
#58 by ArualsugA, Jun 19, 2008
I think some of these are good choices, but some need a lot more justification than you gave them. It seems as though you've forgotten about all new music, the only recent ones i noticed were 'If everyone cared' which you only put there cos others tole you to[implying you think it's not that great] and 'lose yourself' by eminem. Which you didn't justify at all.
#59 by B Nelson, Jun 19, 2008
you can all breathe a sign of relief.. the Nickleback song has been removed...

"Tear You Apart" is a new song .. as is "Running The World"

I agree with a comment above: the list says: songs worth listening to.... OK, some of them are crap, but for an 80\'s child, most of them bring back good memories. I kinda enjoyed seeing some songs listed here. Makes me want to dig into my old record collection( you now, before cd\'s hit the market) and enjoy some of the most tasteless but memorable music ever. Keep it up :)
#66 by Elaine, Jun 19, 2008
Hey, everyone.... Don't be so cruel. Everyone is entitled to their own favorite songs - give the girl a break...Didn't any of you learn it's better to play nice than nasty?
#67 by RobHand, Jun 19, 2008
I'd be worried if Stairway to Heaven by The EAGLES was on the list... considering it\'s a Led Zeppelin song....

good list tho!

where are ked zeppelin, bob dylan and rolling stones?
Try also to listen jethro tull, bob seger, and the doors, when talking about lyrics...;)

This is my second comment because I have found the comments more interesting than the article to be honest. But this is not to say this a bad article people. Remember, it\'s only one persons opinion. Maybe this list needs some kiwi music.

"Challenge yourself to listen etc"

But this isn't a challenging list. It's all FM airplay, AOR, etc. Nowhere near enough variety or research. And as someone else must have said, waaaaaayyyy too much U2, Ultravox and Sting.
#72 by Krispy, Jun 20, 2008
I dunno about you Andy, but I havent heard many of the songs, maybe radio plays different stuff where you live, but like, Gong, and Stardust Cowboy, I never heard of them. Oh and wayyyyyyyyy not enough U2 lol, they rock man!
I will add U2 Vertigo to the list.
#73 by doug, Jun 21, 2008
i agree with to much u2
frank zappa is a piece of crap dont add him to any list ever ever ever......exept for "why does it hurt when i pee" jk..

Wow... Something of a limited record collection here. Heavy duplication on U2, Ultravox, Bowie, Beatles. Are you my Dad....?
#75 by caroline, Jun 21, 2008
To the person above who made the comment that Dear God is XTC this is not correct here is a point from Midge Ure Page
""Dear God" is not an homage to XTC, but Ure's Christmas list this year. He leaves out the GI Joe dolls and the Barbies and just wants some peace in the restless world, a worldwide religion, a home for the children. But he knows there is probably nobody listening to him anyway. It's a pop song about some simple requests that may never be realized."

It is not a song most people are familiar with - definately deserving of being on this list, EXCELLENT choice of an over looked song.

There are a lot of bad radio songs on here. Beautiful Day is one of U2's worst songs. Nickelback and Greenday don't belong on here. Especially "American Idiot." There are too many things wrong with that song to talk about it here. Maybe you need to diversify your taste in music before you start writing about it.
#78 by bardagain, Jun 21, 2008
I don\'t usually reply to blogs but I have a few comments. First WELL DONE ! Very brave to publish a list like this since there are as many alternative lists as there are posts. Music is so personal and individual.
My second point is not so good. STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN IS BY LED ZEPPLIN NOT THE EAGLES !!!. How could you !! (It\'s on Led Zepplin IV)and if the Eagles covered it I\'d really rather not know.
#79 by Popmeister, Jun 21, 2008
just wondering did you mean to put stairway to heaven by the eagles because it is by led zeppelin but i agree with your list they usually strike a chord with me
#80 by keyboardologist (Triond contibuter), Jun 21, 2008
No Pink Floyd? "Cats in the Cradle" (Harry Chapin) Good list. ou could probably go over 100 songs (or more).
#81 by Zack, Jun 21, 2008
No, Metallica?
I know that some people aren't into to metal and hard rock, but there are definetely songs that would work for this list, like "Fade to black", meaningful , but with a "Metallica feel.
Other bands like Iron Maiden, Journey and Boston might fit the list well too.

Sorry for such harsh criticism, but I'm very dedicated to my music, and seeing "Anarchy in the U.K." sent me into a bit of a fit. In any case, at least you're giving your opinion
#82 by Jon, Jun 21, 2008
How could you not include the "He Stopped Loving Her Today?" The greatest country song of all time!
#83 by ken, Jun 22, 2008
whats with the cold war crap? its over.
#84 by Mack, Jun 22, 2008
Ok, most of these songs are good. and I agree with several of these people\'s posts, Especially Zack\'s about the metal. One artist that I think you be scattered all over this list is Alice Cooper. \"Only Women Bleed,\" yeah, that\'s about domestic violence. \"Cold Ethyl,\" that ones about rape. And whoever said that comment about American Pie by Don McClean, it\'s not that hard to figure out what it\'s about. It\'s about the day that Buddy Holly died in his infamous plane accident. Common sense people. And another good metal song to add to the list: Down With the Sickness by Disturbed. It\'s about a boy that was beaten by his mother when he was growing up. Also, Inside the Fire by Disturbed. That one\'s suicide. And too much U2? Grow up! No such thing! I know I will get ridiculed for this, but I couldn\'t care less. Homies by Insane Clown Posse. That song is about the loyalty that the Juggalos (ICP fans) have towards friends and family! Yeah, I\'m only 17, but I grew up around music. I am in a band. All we do are tributes to great rockers! We have done a lot of these songs on this list! Oh yeah! I am appalled that you could get The Eagles and Led Zepplin confused. The Eagles did Hotel California and Zepplin did Stairway, two totally different sounds! Come on man!
#85 by ur not smart, Jun 22, 2008
you say stairway to heaven has been heard a million times but you don't even know who wrote it... i guess ur just jealous of it because its so popular. i don't understand how you heard it a million times and don't know anything about it.
#86 by MusicMan, Jun 22, 2008
Wow...what a disgrace. You do not have any classic rock, blues, jazz, real country...anything you know...with true emotion behind it. This list lacks in every way. There are a couple good tunes on there but nothing exceptional. You don't have anything by Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ike Turner, Cream, Eric Clapton, Genesis, Merle Haggard, George Jones, BB King, Professor Longhair, Peter Tosh, Toots and the Maytals....those are just bands and artists off of the top of my head that have a place in music history as masters and creators of genres and styles yet you include none of them. Your description of each song is awful as well, you provide no real reason as to why it is a great song.
Oh and "A Day In the Life" as The Beatles greatest work? Please, listen to more Beatles.
#87 by leiggi, Jun 22, 2008
Interesting list but if you really want profound and amusing lyrics try listening to Warren Zevon. He was the master. R.I.P. WZ.

Thick as Thieves by The Jam. Great song about childhood friends growing up and growing apart as time goes on.
#91 by Dani, Jun 23, 2008
Don't fear the reaper - blue oyster cult

A broke down melody - Jack Johnson

Hotel California - The Eagles

Wish you were here/Great gig in the sky - Pink Floyd

Immigrant song/Stairway to heaven - Led zepplin

Fade to Black - Metallica

INCOMPLETE LIST - YOU FAIL
#92 by WTF, Jun 23, 2008
Stairway to heaven is not by the eagles!!!
#93 by Pete, Jun 23, 2008
Based on the amount of comments, you did a great job. I'd like to see what some of these people's lists like and add my own completely useless criticisms. Great job. Don't let some of these idiots bring you down. Let us see them do better. You did great and I found your opinions greatly enjoyable.
#94 by LadyRammstein, Jun 23, 2008
WOAH!! i think you meant Hotel California by the Eagles not Stairway to Heaven everyone knows thats by Led Zep'!
how about some of these:
Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 by Pink Floyd
Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
Daniel by Elton John (or even Someone Saved my Life Tonight)
One by Metalica i'm not a Metalica fan but that is a pretty good song about the horrors of war
Winter - Tori Amos
Brick - Ben Folds Five
and you forgot my fave 2 U2 songs With or Without you and All I want is You (yup i was a Joshua Tree era baby)

overall it was on ok list.
#95 by JVB, Jun 23, 2008
Man, that's a lot of work you put into this, thank you so much. However you did forget Otto's Daughter "Everything"...:) I will forgive you. lol http://www.myspace.com/ottosdaughter
#96 by Dinorokr53, Jun 23, 2008
\"American Pie\" is about more than Buddy Holly\'s plane crash-it is about the entire decade of the sixties and people and events of that era. Also if anyone would like to check out a band that has wisdom and humor in the songwriting and a musical style that incorporates country/rock/bluegrass/jazz/and gospel, check out Goose Creek Symphony. Band leader/songwriter Charlie Gearhart has been recording and playing eclectic music since 1970. They are not for everybody, but they will get yer toes tapping and make you feel good on a crappy day, guaranteed.
#97 by dewey, Jun 23, 2008
I tried out some these songs I had never heard. Thanks. If you are looking for meaningful songs, try The Flaming Lips, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Sublime. I find meaning in them. I loved the mention of Counting Crows, but I believe their are better ones than Mr. Jones. Also, Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan might deserve a mention. And kudos for putting your opinion up for all of us who are not brave enough or too lazy to do it to examine.
#98 by k8, Jun 23, 2008
I am sorry that people think that when you offer your opinion/choice that opens the door to criticism. All this is is a list of his/her choices, people. Nobody claimed to be a music expert here. These are the songs that speak to that person.......a little respect would be nice
#99 by Concerned, Jun 24, 2008
K8 is right. I read the list and agreed with some, was confused by others. But I got irritated reading the comments from all the people criticizing some one else's opinion. It is pathetic how someone can spend so much time coming up with songs that are personal to them and sharing that list with the world, and most of the people whine and complain that it is not to their taste. That's the point people! It is not supposed to be to your taste, so get over the fact that the world does not revolve around you or make your own list so people can say how pathetic it is.
#100 by Megan, Jun 25, 2008
Music is meant to be interpreted in many different ways and different songs give different meanings (or no meaning) to different people. Otherwise music would be lame.

So everyone just shut up about who is "better."
#101 by God, Jun 25, 2008
I would recommend the following:
Bob Dylan (all)
Bob Dylan Covers
Marvin Gaye What's going on? (album not song)
Return to Forever Spain & Hymn of the 7th Galaxy
Weather Report Birdland
Bo Diddly Bo Diddly
Herbie Hancock Chameleon & Watermelon Man

Others worth mentioning:
Sublime, The Roots, Jurassic 5, The Flaming Lips, Panic! at the Disco (NOT!), Miles Davis, Django Reinhart, The Band, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vahn, etc.
#102 by kmtl, Jun 25, 2008
I know most of the songs, and I agree with a lot of them.
#103 by crispeater, Jun 26, 2008
I just stumbled on this and I thought it was interesting. I like a lot of these songs too. Don't pay attention to the negative comments. You're entitled to listen to whatever music you like, and write about it in whatever way you want to.
By the way, if you think A Day In The Life by The Beatles is a good song then you should try listening to a band called Love (if you haven't already). Their album Forever Changes features some songwriting and string arrangements that Beatles fans should appreciate. Anyone that likes The Beatles should also listen to The Byrds. Like The Beatles they experimented with music. They did everything from folk music to songs about space travel. They were, at one point, labelled as "the American Beatles".
Take care and keep enjoying whatever music you want to listen to.
#104 by this list saddens me, Jun 27, 2008
i agree with jim, and if your going to put bad songs and artists on this list, at least spell them correctly. If I wasn't bored out of my mind, then I probably wouldn't have read through this, because I knew it would be bad when it started off by saying that "A Day In The Life" was probably the Beatles greatest work.
#105 by Scott M., Jun 27, 2008
I think you need to look beyond your puny iTunes library. I'm am a musician who is deeply disappointed with this list. Look at some music that happened before 1980 and you will be surprised at what you find. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles. I'm not saying you're an idiot, I'm saying that before you make a list like this, complete your research. Find more than songs that you have known for a while and, like it or not, you may find deep meaning behind the songs of artists that you have decided you will not listen to without giving them a chance in the first place. This has happened to me. My favorite band is Led Zeppelin, and I hate rap. In my case, it's not deep meaning, just a good song. I discovered I liked the song "Stronger" by Kanye West. You'll be surprised at what you find in the world of music that is outside of your iPod. Please take my advice into consideration, you will not be disappointed!
#106 by shawn, Jun 27, 2008
i'm 50/50 on this list. good and not so good...
#107 by B Nelson - author, Jun 27, 2008
some people are saying there are no new songs, in fact there are.. you maybe just havent heard of them, as well as songs "pre-80's" there are some, maybe you just dont recognize them.

And to Scott M - who says not to listen to my "iPod" please note I do not even own an iPod.
To the people who say I watch too much MTV, I live on a farm for heavens sake, I dont even have time to watch MTV.

People have different musical tastes, I didnt want to name every "WELL KNOWN" song, I still would like people to listen to some on here they are not familiar with. Try those, rather than complaining about the ones you do know.
Or if you have some to add, please add them.

Thanks, we all love music, maybe not the same music, but we all are passionate about what we love.
#108 by RK, Jun 27, 2008
Now just zip it in a pack of mp3's and offer it for download.
#109 by grazoo, Jun 30, 2008
Ah the list!

Watch people overeact.

#110 by MyChemMeghan, Jun 30, 2008
Well I stopped reading the list when it came to the first song.
However I only stayed on this webpage to read all the retarted comments that you people leave and let me say that they are quite interesting.
=)
Anyways I believe that we all have different tastes when it comes to songs that are worth listening too.
You might say some really old band that is worth listening too and I say My Chemical Romance and Porcelain and the Tramps are worth listening too.
See the difference?
Yeah well as long as were nit bashing at anybody they everything seems fine.
And yeah there is such as too much U2; then again I change the channel as soon as they come on, haha.
#111 by adaline, Jul 1, 2008
Lets edit the title:

"Songs worth listening to so you can realize how much they blow and how shallow and uncreative and drug induced they are"

Obvious lies told so far on this page
Bob Dylan is supposed to be the best lyricist ever:

U2 is worth listening to:

Rolling stones .blah blah jumping jack flash:

every one has different tastes ergo that makes all music relevant:

my chemical romance is worth listening to:
in conclusion.
jesus folks, stop listening to the radio and get some taste.
#112 by shamast, Jul 1, 2008
Adaline, Imagine is a great song.

The rest of these songs come from the mind of a person that hasn't actually listened to any sort of good music, just regurgitating what they've heard from their friends at MIX!93 or their local U2 propoganda station.
#113 by julz, Jul 1, 2008
Um, from a guy who critises gramma. How can "Hereos" be 'timeless' but 'dated'? What happened to the Neils - Diamond and Young.
#114 by Hah., Jul 2, 2008
I know most of these songs. If you dabble into a more eclectic pool of music that doesn't beat the snot out of the dieing classic rock horse, I might be swayed to favor your opinions. Sadly, none of these songs are much to be spoken of nor much to rock to.
#115 by BJude , Jul 3, 2008
Whether you agree or disagree with the songs listed, you have to remember this is one persons opinion not the end all be all. I dig that A Day In the Life was #1, but have some issues with a number of the tracks listed. No mention of The Kinks??!! Ray Davies wrote some of the best songs about social commentary and the common man.

#116 by ted dancin, Jul 3, 2008
Can - Halleluhwah

you can just replace the entire list with that song if you want

#120 by David, Jul 7, 2008
No Jeff Buckley? Come on, Grace alone is one of the best songs ever.
#121 by silent jay, Jul 7, 2008
wow . when did these terrible lists become fashionable anyway ? kids go through college -get a degree in media and land a job and bang the rest of us have to constantly stumble on these absurdly pretentious lists. what is up with that ? I just can\'t understand why our \"media\" or \"writing\" society can\'t grow up and recognize that music and taste in music is purely subjective. I think if there is anyone who has\'nt heard any of these songs they maybe live in a cave on a deserted island somewhere so what is the point I ask ??
i weep for the future.
#122 by amazed by rudeness..., Jul 7, 2008
Wow, I'm amazed at how hoighty toighty and obnoxious some of these people are getting over SONGS. if you've got a problem, make your own list. simple as that. plus he can't write about everything, now can he? this is a list of songs that, in this guy's OPINION are worth listening to. this is proof that everyone's opinion is different, ease up a little, will ya? lighten up, it's just music.

:] i like the list, it must have taken a lot of consideration to narrow the list!
#123 by silent jay, Jul 7, 2008
what\'s rude is clogging up the net with drivel. I\'ve sat around long enough and read list after list after list and then we always get mr.\"amazed by rudeness\" jumping in and saving the day for the writer . well excuse me - they\'ve put themselves out there so therefore it is my DUTY to comment.
as far as \"it\'s just music\" - i can\'t believe someone actually saying that. I don\'t have to write lists that\'s the beauty of being me.

There are some good tunes on the list. there happy ??

#124 by David, Jul 8, 2008
"It is in some kind of African language, so it must be good."
Well, obviously. Every single song from that whole continent is awesome!!!
#125 by Dunhill_BKK, Jul 8, 2008
XTC?
#126 by sigit, Jul 8, 2008
I love U2's songs, but I think there's too much U2's in the list.
#127 by Michael Austin, Jul 8, 2008
I know those songs, and they are great....but way too mainstream for the mind...what about the symphonies and expiremental stuff..you left 20 generes out bro...but they are wotrth a quick dabble
#128 by Kenya Y Coleman, Jul 8, 2008
I agree. 'Each their own! Why attack someone else's preferences in music when it is so subjective. I love Jethro Tull, but I don't care that they didn't make the list. Thanks for noticing "I Would Do Anything For Love" by Meatloaf and "Dear God" by Midge Ure (yes, I remember the video-not XTC); I think it's better than alot of christian rock, and so that song by Jewel. 'Beautiful Day' is a good choice, but thst's an inspiring album. There is something about "Radio Free Europe" By REM! Where is "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush?
#129 by kenya y coleman, Jul 8, 2008
Yes, American Pie! What about "Year 2525" and...."Abraham, Martin, and John"? All the hate! I just wanted to know what songs I haven't heard of! I want "The Wedding Song"....at my wedding!

#130 by Justin, Jul 8, 2008
He's not saying they are the best songs, they are just ones worth listening to I guess. Some are definitely worth listening to again. Thanks
#131 by Matt, Jul 8, 2008
How could you forget XXX song??? or how about XXZ???

People please you can add a song you think is worthy but relax with all the criticism. There's nothing wrong with this list, it's really just ones that personally hit the author to put down at the time.

Just embrace that it is a random list with not very many bad songs on it. This isn't the place to argue about how good they are, just keep listening to new stuff or feel free to suggest it here.

So now I'll follow my own advice, and suggest anything done by the New Pornographers/Destroyer/Neko Case. Great lyricists.
#132 by Unityandoutsider, Jul 8, 2008
You've left soooo much off of this list. This list barely even scratches the surface of all the music that is out there today. Speaking of lyricists, why is there no Modest Mouse on there? Probably because there's no indie whatsoever.

Listen to more music before posting a list like this
#133 by Marty, Jul 9, 2008
Nice list way too much U2 and police/sting

Just from memory nearly 20% of the list is from one or the other.

Good songs and artists but nearly 20%???

Perhaps you should get a bigger music collection and modify the list
#134 by Michelle, Jul 9, 2008
There are a lot here I agree with and just as many that I don't. it is a very well written post.
#135 by Georgina, Jul 9, 2008
I highly recommend Waiting For The Last Word - Miles From Nowhere to be added to this list. They're a small band from Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. The song is sung in a point-of-view style, of an elderly man stuck in a nursing home. It tells of him being lonely and wishing the he would die so he didn't have to live there any more. An AMAZINGLY touching song that everyone should listen to. I really think it would be a good idea to add it to this wonderful list you have here. =]
#136 by dood2020, Jul 9, 2008
too bad theyre all mainstream songs, or most of em at least. its almost impossible to set up a list like that. every single person has his own list... so if someone has something bad to say, make yer own freakin list...
#137 by excellentvision, Jul 10, 2008
Hi, Nelson! It is good list. I noted some positive songs.

I found some more positive songs here (music video and lyrics are included)...give it a try!

#139 by Dave, Jul 10, 2008
Anyone else feel this is kind of a "safe" list? Not that I think I could do better, but these are almost all very well known songs that many people can agree are good.

Not that there is anything wrong with that
#140 by choices, Jul 10, 2008
Who considers "Merideth Monk" or "Gong" to be mainstream or "safe"? this list has BOTH mainstream and obscure songs. loved it, surely something new for those willing to step outside their box, and ya I even spotted 2 songs from the last year, so those who said its all old, shut up, you obviously didnt know every song.

obviusly you don't know enough music, and it's influenced by mass media; look around, there are more bands better than u2 and queen; for example: MUSE.

you only listen "classics", oldies !
#144 by :(, Jul 13, 2008
1. Where is Pink Floyd. Where is Bob Dylan. He and Jim Morrison were amazing lyricists. Where are The Doors on this list.
2. That Modern English song is called \"Melt With You\" I think.
3. \"A Day In The Life\" is the Beatles\' best song?
4. I\'m kind of in disbelief that you put up Sister Mercy\'s \"Gimme Shelter\" over the Rolling Stones\'. Are you kidding. There is not even any Rolling Stones here and you put up a pretty crappy cover of one of their best songs? Ahhh.

It upsets me that you had so much room for U2 and The Police but none for others. I would\'ve given each band/artist one song.
It seems like you are on an okay track... I just wish you listened to more music. More Beatles, Doors, etc. Where is Eric Clapton/Cream. Where is Led Zeppelin. Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen. Heart. Fleetwood Mac maybe. You picked \"American Idiot\" over all of these. WHAT.

And obviously music is always gonna be subjective, but if you love these songs so much, if they are in your top 70ish songs of all time, it seems like you should have a little more than \"a different song.\" or \"good lyrics.\" to explain your choice.

I\'m so disappointed.
#145 by ironrain, Aug 7, 2008
'Albuquerque' - Weird Al Yankovic

its OBVIOUS!

Its got it ALL!
#146 by wow, Aug 9, 2008
it is not I'll Stop the World, it is Melt With You.
what a pity that you think everyone should hear it, but you don't even know the name of the song.
#147 by deepspeed, Oct 17, 2008
I like it but/and I may say that the author's ear is limited to what the radio feeds. Much had been said about where is this, where is that; and this couch is for average pop-rock listeners.
Reminds me why the Sex Pistols never went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - go figure it out.

You should cross U2's "beautiful day" out, it's plagiarism of A-Ha, who sued U2 and won.
#151 by Sam Herlihy's Waistcoat, Oct 27, 2008
Just a few points:

The Skin Deeps? Or just Skin Deep by the Stranglers;
The Devils Party? Either choose Devil Inside or The Strangest Party (or forget both and pick Shine Like It Does instead);
What has Cities in Dust got to do with anger? Unless you're ticked off with Vesuvius blowing;
The Police never recorded Russians, just Sting;
The Modern English song is I'll Stop The World And Melt With You, so you're all right/wrong;
Insight has nothing to do with Ian Curtis' suicide - listen to Passover instead and FEEL the despair of his situation.

Have to hand it to ya though, Jarvis Cocker's Running The World is a top song, though should come with a Parental Advisory sticker ;-)
#152 by Sam Herlihy\'s Waistcoat, Oct 27, 2008
Just realised that there's no Manic Street Preachers on this list. If you want lyrical power, listen to anything on The Holy Bible, standout tracks probably being Archives of Pain, 4st 7lb and The Intense Humming of Evil.

#158 by Mikey W, Nov 10, 2008
Some truely awesome tracks in there.
Loving the inclusion of psychadelic furs and Slapp happy
I may not agree with some choices, but, contrary to what people seem to be suggesting, it's not impossible to for a group to have multiple referrances in such a list. I would have liked to see some pink floyd and dream theater in there, perhaps pendulum? but person choice i suppose prevails =)
#159 by  B Nelson, Nov 12, 2008
thanks for the great comments!
I want to add - HANDLEBARS by Flobots - really neat song building from innocence to destruction.
As for those of you who dont like the songs.. I never said it was a "BEST SONGS" list.. if you want a Radiohead song mentioned.. go ahead and name one here in the comments, if all you can do is complain but not add a song... well..kinda doesn't make sense does it?
ADD YOUR SONGS HERE DONT COMPLAIN THEY ARE NOT ON THE LIST IF YOU ARE UNWILLING TO ADD THEM (as I pointed out earlier - add your songs in the comments area)
#160 by mabel, Nov 22, 2008
don't worry for one that likes them there 100 that don't
#161 by Saje Williams, Dec 6, 2008
No worries. It's a pretty good list, as such things go. One addition I'd make is "Learning to Live" by Dream Theater. Another is "Free Will" by Rush.
#162 by Saje Williams, Dec 6, 2008
Oh, and of course, I forgot something...A couple of songs by Concrete Blonde. "Dance Along the Edge" and "God is a Bullet."
#163 by Jaye, Feb 2, 2009
I stopped reading when I got to The Police, "Every Breath You Take."
It was then that you stopped being credible, as this song was written about "Big Brother" and was influenced by the Cold War relationship between the US and the USSR, not about an attachment between two people, romantic or otherwise.
"I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. These were the Reagan, Star Wars years. Oh God, now you'll say I'm being pretentious..."

Your opinions are your own and I won't knock them. I would suggest researching before stating facts, however.
#164 by Don the Man, Feb 6, 2009
Jaye (#164)
I watched a show where Sting was talking about this song, he said it was a nasty bit about relationships. Perhaps he also said the other comment on another show, I googled it and under Wikimedia it shows that it was written durring his divorce and is a sinister relation ship song that happened durring the Big Brother era.. he is refering though to the surveillance and control of a loved one in controlling relationship sort of way.

Don't listen to everyone hating on you. Of course you can't get everyone's favorite bands on here, and I don't recall it saying anywhere in the list that these are the best or deepest songs ever (I think it specifically said it WASN'T that, actually).

I will use this list to find some new music to listen to. A lot of the bands here I had either never heard of or had never listened to. Thanks for providing your opinion, it's useful to those with open minds looking for new experiences. Keep it up.

Perhaps "How to Disappear Completely" - Radiohead or perhaps "Blind Willie McTell" - Bob Dylan. Pretty much anything off of Kid A would be better than half of this list.

I don't see why people are complaining. There's a bauhaus song on the list, therefore it must be good. Seriously though, good range of stuff.
